This is a huge step and is something we should all applaud.
Let’s just hope the procurement process incentivizes the creation of new innovative companies built on Canadian owned IP rather than simply dishing out capital to the old established bloc (Bombardier, AtkinsRéalis, etc.)
The aerospace investments are going to be critical.
This line is really good:
> Canada will partner: Where Canada lacks the capability to build domestically or there is an advantage to working jointly with partners, we will partner with trusted allies to deliver capabilities for the Canadian Armed Forces.
That’s excellent news.
I can’t help but be a little disappointed by the minimal mentions of drones here:
> Create a Drone Innovation Hub at the National Research Council, with an investment of $105 million over three years, and develop an aircraft platform for research, development, demonstration, and qualification of new technologies for Canada’s defence industries with an investment of $459 million over five years.
I don’t think we can afford to be idealist about R&D in aircraft platforms right now. We need to be pragmatic and see what Ukraine is doing with drone technologies and defense.
But overall, this is a strong start to an industry and department that has experienced decades of mismanagement and underinvestments despite being one of the most, if not the most, trained and disciplined militaries on the planet.
