    1. This article undercuts itself, pointing out that the Chinese government already has the means to spy on most of us via other means. Ultimately all products spy on their users now and it’s unclear to me that Chinese spying is any more or less nefarious than spying by US tech companies or the United States government itself.

If one wanted to make an argument for comprehensive privacy legislation that criminalizes this activity, I’d be all ears, but trying to spread the worry of ‘risks’ from China without acknowledging what’s already happening from all actors lacks credibility.

So the CCP is going to find out where and when I buy groceries ?

Big security hole there, better start swapping up my regular banana supplier.
      <sheesh!>

If you use a cell-phone you’ve already given up any form of privacy you thought you might still have.

    3. As opposed to cars made by US companies which are obviously NOT gathering every scrap of data about Canadians that they can. *rolls eyes*

As opposed to cars made by the US that are not supposedly gathering data on us? And between the two, last I checked, only one of those two countries was threatening to take away our sovereignty, and it wasn’t China.

    5. At this point i honestly think id rather get spied on in 35k car then buy a 60k piece of shit American car. I do think the security risks are somewhat overblown though

It is reasonable to assume that every single car with any amount of digital control has, or can have in the next update, a kill switch under the control of the company that manufactured it.

If we are really concerned about this, rather than shill for American EVs they should figure out a way to turn a smart car dumb while still being useable.

    7. So does every other car made. They all phone home an insane amount. So its the Chinese government instead of a corporation. I actually kind of prefer that if I’m honest.

    8. I find it odd that so many consumers just don’t care about their own or anybody’s privacy.
I’d rather be spied on by a democratic country than a communist country. IMO

This is almost a trope at this point.

All the North American auto already has this capability. It’s collecting as much or more data on you than facebook does – and it accessible through malicious means by bad actors. OnStar, Synch, Connect… whatever you want to call it. Look at Tesla’s with their cameras recording everything. They all have your location, most have cameras and microphones etc.

Chinese vehicles pose no more of a risk than any other the car companies.

      Regulate it. Monitor it.

Hell. Make laws to protect our privacy.
Why isn’t this done already? Because it’s big business to collect this data.

At the end of the day, North American auto is terrified for their bottom line. They will be forced to compete and lower their prices.

This will be good for consumers and bad for them.

They don’t want this at all

    10. As others have mentioned, domestic cars do this too.

We can pass laws to try to restrict certain data collection, but in my view the better solution is to give people the right to produce and sell third party firmware. Digital locks are being used to extract rent and lock us into bad products. We need the right to repair and the right to improve the products we already own.

It’s better for consumers and also creates opportunities for new businesses.

when u lease a tesla u have to give them ur address, ur salary, banking information, social security etc. And elon musk wants canada to be the 51st state. Tesla is a huge security risk already
