If you are competing as the representative of a country on the world stage against other countries, it’s kinda hard not to.

Bad news for mickeyD’s: not a lot of big Macs to order for the White House visit

  3. “That makes no sense to me,” Jordan, a former NCAA wrestler, told The Hill.

Athletes should be more like former NCAA wrestler Jim Jordan and use their power to cover up sexual abuse!

I remember the good old days when the Olympics weren’t political. You know back when the US versus the USSR hockey teams were a thing and people put up the power fist on the podium and people turned their back on the podium and a bunch of terrorist kidnapped the Jewish team and killed them all. You know back before all this political stuff got involved.

Good for them. Athletes have always been some of our most powerful voices for social justice, and their platform matters more than ever right now. Trump’s policies directly impact so many communities these athletes represent.

  6. Most Americans (regardless of party affiliation) don’t really believe in anything. Everything they do and say is performative. Americans are largely „actors“.

Any dignified person would be against Trump.

If you are pro-Trump you support a pedophile, rapist, insurrectionist, fraudster, election cheater ,tax evader, felon, con man, kidnapper and murderer.

What kind of people would support such an evil person like Trump?

  8. Stop making political things non political but also then back again to political.

Star Trek, Family Guy, Olympics, Town Hall meetings, is nothing sacred?

  9. “But Trump attacking any U.S. athlete, several Democrats argued, crosses a line regarding civility…”

    Bless your heart.

My hot take: the Olympics have always been political. There’s so much damned money in it, it’s impossible NOT to be.

With the advent of social media, phones recording, and the internet….an athlete farts in Quebec, and some dude in Shibuya is going, „Nani?“

It’s going to grow more prevalent I think, while much of the 24/7 US/western news cycle is dominated in what I would describe as incendiary and divisive rhetoric at best. These premium specimens of humanity who’ve been training to reach the peak for years aren’t just superb athletes and performers, they’re people and they represent their country whether they like it or not. I expect more than a few to speak up or take various actions, depending on the cause or whatever, while much of what we see on TV and online is what it is.

    Just my two cents.

Wait, did we lose the right to free speech? It’s still ok, right? Right?

They’re upset because athletes are using their first amendment right to voice their beliefs?

But whenever there is an athlete that supports their agenda they will parade them around and give nonstop coverage?

    Hmmmm

  13. You mean the Olympic games, the games that have been a political show of force since they became international? Really? REALLY?

  14. More accurately: Trump and the GOP have turned issues of basic right and wrong into political „opinions“ so that they can throw the „political“ accusation at anyone speaking common sense.

What part of sending athletes to represent countries on an international stage that rotates location between said countries trying to show off the best venue for prestige wasn’t already inherently political?

Guess Rule 50 only applies to „political stuff we approve of“ and not awkward pushed boundaries, from the ’68 salute and human rights protests to today’s conversations about home politics, so it’s not like this is new. It’s just a reminder that sport and politics have never been separate, no matter how many top down memos the IOC sends.

Watch out. Trump will here about this and start rooting for the Russian athletes
