      Whereas the Taliban were indistinguishable from the population in Afghanistan, they would stick out a lot in Iran and lose major advantages.

      As an example of how fucked up this is, in the wake of 9/11 the Iranian government fed the US actionable intelligence on the Taliban and encouraged their ally the Northern Alliance to work with the US. Back channel negotiations were started offering full denuclearization in exchange for normalization of relations.

      In response, Dubya declared Iran part of the Axis of Evil. The moderates lost so much face that hardliner Ahmadinejad was elected and relations spiraled even more.
