News snippet: Barack Obama publicly gave his support to demonstrators in Minneapolis for standing up to the “unprecedented nature” of the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Minnesota.

Speaking in an interview with progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen on Saturday, the former president discussed the power that US citizens hold when standing up for the values they believe in and his hopes for the next generation of American leaders.

“The reason I point out that I don’t think the majority of the American people approve of this is because ultimately, the answer is going to come from the American people,” he said. “We just saw this in Minnesota, in Minneapolis.”

“It is important for us to recognize the unprecedented nature of what ICE was doing in Minneapolis, St Paul, the way that federal agents, ICE agents were being deployed, without any clear guidelines, training, pulling people out of their homes, using five-year-olds to try to bait their parents, all the stuff that we saw, teargassing crowds simply who were standing there, not breaking any laws,” he added.

Just waiting for Trump to rage-post another monkey image. Barack is baiting him to be a jerk, and it’s soooo easy.

I mean, thanks I guess, but it’s a bit late here, and IMO a bit hypocritical

ICE was started under the Bush administration, and the Obama had the opportunity to make a change, so what did the Obama administration do with ICE?

    – Expansion of Enforcement Infrastructure: Under Obama, ICE’s capacity grew substantially. The agency’s agent count increased from 2,700 in 2003 to 5,000 by 2008, and the use of Secure Communities (SCOMM), a program that automatically shared fingerprints from state and local arrests with federal databases, was expanded nationwide. This allowed ICE to identify and target undocumented immigrants more systematically.

    – Increased Deportations: Between 2009 and 2016, the Obama administration oversaw the deportation of approximately 2.4 to 2.8 million undocumented immigrants, earning him the nickname “Deporter-in-Chief” from critics and advocacy groups.

    – Use of 287(g) Agreements: The Obama administration expanded 287(g) agreements, which deputize local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws. These agreements gave local police unprecedented authority to conduct immigration-related searches and arrests, effectively extending ICE’s reach into communities.

    – Legal and Policy Shifts: While Obama emphasized targeted enforcement, prioritizing individuals with criminal records, recent border crossers, or threats to national security, his administration still maintained broad enforcement powers. The use of ICE detainers (requests to hold individuals after release from jail) also increased, though their actual impact on deportations was later questioned.

    – Controversy and Criticism: Despite a more targeted approach compared to later administrations, 40% of those deported in 2015 had no criminal conviction, and critics argue that the scale of enforcement under Obama laid the groundwork for future mass deportation campaigns.

‚Supporting‘ IMO means showing your true colours and actually STANDING with the people you claim to support. Now THAT would be a symbolic gesture. You know, as opposed to getting out of bed, drinking an espresso and sending some bullshit into the social media sphere where there is quite enough bullshit already. But hey, good for him, I guess.

OooooOOOOoooo, what a tough stand to take! I miss how boring politics was under Obama, but we need a more vicious leader today. Mild, neo-liberal politicians were one rung on the ladder that led us down to Trump.

  13. Where’s he been for a year? It’s about time. And why just Minnesota? Doesn’t he see/care about the horrors of ICE all over America? Someday, some way, Obama will feel passionate outrage about what Trump is doing to America. But it isn’t happening yet. One wonders what it will take.

He does the bare minimum. As ex-presidents go, he’s a lightweight. The country is sliding into fascism, and he’s off producing documentaries. He barely bothered to show any support for Biden or Harris. He was obviously a transformative figure symbolically, but he is light on accomplishments and substance.

-Obama condoning the protests four weeks late ✅

-Labeling Brian Tyler Cohen a “progressive” ✅

-Providing zero guidance or useful suggestions ✅

Wow, it’s almost as if liberals are trying to theatrically appeal to leftists by once again doing the classic “bare minimum, too late” thing.

  16. Glad to see someone with national name recognition taking a stand on it.

    Crickets from sitting Dem leadership

Too bad he couldn’t support occupy while The Daily Show lampooned it and we got sold out while The banks got bailed out. When it was Obama’s policy to screw the American worker and home owner he sure didn’t like protest then. But yeah yeah let him pretend he cares now.

  18. fapstronautica on

That’s great. Is he now going to denounce billionaires and corporate control of the Democratic Party and demand power to the people?

  19. doginvestments on

Why would he do this? Proves he believes in party and politics over the rule of law.
