Religious organizations are ideally tax exempt because they provide things to the community. Soup kitchens, homeless outreach etc.

However, I don’t see temples and shrines in Japan doing such things. I do see them driving around in really nice European cars though.

    Tax ‚em.

They are some of the richest organizations in japan, and they do not provide community aid like soup kitchen or even homeless out reach programs. Not even orphanage projects. Thats the entire point of a religious tax exemption. Tax these assholes please lol

At the very least they should tax temples and shrines that charge 拝観料. Even if it is only a tax on the income that comes from 拝観料.
Take for example Kiyomizu Temple, it has around 5 million visitors every year and charges 500 yen. That is 2,5 billion yen that is not being taxed.
And that is not taking into account the sale of amulets and so forth.

Finally, something that sounds productive and helpful for society. Tax em!!

  5. Honestly, I’m on-board for this. I remember a second-hand story of a cocky son of a local shrine owner told by a coworker who taught them. He bragged about how much money people donate and called them stupid for believing in such things. He of course wore branded clothing and was a huge dick.
