      The problem is that the administration is trying to play both bully and friendly neighbor. I do believe that China is pursuing modern imperialism. But our government, and particularly State Department, isnt looking super trustworthy right now

      This is a lie. Trump has said repeatedly that he thinks he personally controls the entire hemisphere.

      Peruvian here.

      Most Peruvians are happy and believe their future is tied with China’s. The whole project is HUGE which will include a railroad to the east coast of Brazil across the Amazon. It’s probably one of the biggest railway project in the few decades

      And as always, when the US complained, we told them “bring some money and do it too” but of course that doesn’t work for the US

      This’d have a bigger impact if the US wasn’t constantly threatening to take over other countries.

      I don’t even think they’re wrong to warn about China controlling so much infrastructure, but it’s not like it’s safer partnering up with the US rather than with China. At least China’s president doesn’t go on late night benders insulting you in front of the whole world whilst *they* screw you over.

      It’s absolutely crazy how drastically my response to this has changed in 2 years. Two years ago I would have thought this meant there was some crazy intel behind the scenes showing that China was about to drastically change their foreign policy.

      Now my response is more along the lines of „Uh oh, grandpa and his friends are off their meds again“.
