Disappointing but unsurprising. The lack of CATOBAR cripples the size, endurance and payload of what can be launched and recovered ultimately.
HMS Prince of Wales has been docked in Portsmouth for a while and they’re doing something. There’s a large tent over the main deck with several cranes and a procession of lorries coming on and off.
Any ideas? Something to do with this?
Pragmatic move. F35B was/is cheaper over a long period compared to the additional cost of CATOBAR, depending on the size of the UAS a STOVL variant of those would almost certainly be cheaper than adding cats and traps retrospectively.
There’s already small drones using quadcopter takeoff with conventional fixed wing flying once airborne.
Ah, Project VIXEN, Project VANQUISH…..and tax payer Budget VANISH
HMS Albion and Bulwark had no end of issues because of design changes late on that removed a deck. QE class were designed with catapult capabilities that were never installed leaving huge empty areas of the ship.
And now they’re deciding to scrap projects that involved retrofitting kit they decided was too expensive to install at build time.
As the one part of the armed forces that properly projects our global power they need to do better.
