Nope. It can’t possibly be be cause its too expensive to have children and the world’s going to hell. Must be those darn gender roles.
This kind of thing is how they justify their handmaids tale style government.
IMO there are a few reasons.
1. Waiting longer to have kids. Every year that clock is ticking down. And women are waiting longer and longer
2. So many people are obese these days which also hurts fertility
3. Our food in the US is poison.
4. Inactive lifestyles
5. Prescription drugs. People are on all kids of drugs that nobody can say for sure don’t hurt fertility
lol. “I don’t want kids because of the man”
Doubt.
If you want kids, you’ll have kids.
More likely: you just don’t want kids.
And that’s fine- I wouldn’t want to bring up kids in this crazy world either.
False. This isn’t why I don’t have kids. It isn’t why many of my friends don’t have kids.
Bc it’s expensive af to have a kid while trying to survive in a late stage capitalist hellscape that is spiraling towards collapse. Boomers have siphoned off all the money and are sitting atop their horde and waiting to die and go to rich people heaven. Meanwhile millennials and younger can’t afford to buy a house and are trapped working multiple jobs.
If life didn’t suck so damn much, people might be more inclined to have kids. But that would require the billionaires to have slightly less money and is therefore impossible.
This is true. It’s because of gender roles. We should return to how we lived in past centuries, when there were no gender roles. /s
It’s too expensive for a lot of people, that’s the main reason. Sure there are plenty of others, but cost is #1, and framing anything else as the main cause just doesn’t help the problem at all
I got a better answer. Bitches be broke. Minimum wage still $7.25 an hour. Rent more than a moon landing; people want People to have kids? F that.
It’s a shared responsibility, there are many factors that has lead us here. Cost of living is one thing but more importantly, financial stability and homeownership is key factors when discussing raising children.
This is a problem in every developed country and it’s getting worse every year. We have shifted from old fashioned family values to a higher quality of life standard and people have a hard time finding a balance.
Women and men work about the same and because of cost of living issues, two salaries buy less today than one salary did 50 years ago, that is a huge problem.
Men and women are also not connecting like they used to because of different lifestyles and social factors. It’s no one’s fault.
We strive to make more money and work less, so we rely on passive income through investments that are detrimental to human growth. Housing market has been completely transformed and there’s so much capital locked up in housing that any major spike in interest rates becomes a threat to the system.
No easy solutions to these challenges and unfortunately, inequality is rising at an ever increasing pace because of an overheated system that don’t allow people to breath.. or much less breed. We require stability and planning.
If you’re living paycheck to paycheck and don’t know if you can afford a house in the future or if you even have a job.. well, you’re less likely to have children. Children is a step you take when there are few other steps to take.
I don’t commenters here actually read the article. Classic reddit.
If I made enough money to cover our bills and put a decent amount away each month my wife would quit her job in a heartbeat. I don’t. And I’m in the top 10% of earners in my city.
So maybe one of the reasons gender roles are collapsing is because they’re no longer economically tenable.
I don’t think it’s impossible that this isn’t part of the story at least. But I don’t think it justifies the hard right turn against women’s rights that conservatives are claiming it does. It could, for example, mean that men need to step the F up and do their fair share of child rearing. It could mean that businesses need to be more flexible and tolerant with parental leave and support. It could mean that the state should do better to support families with things like state-funded child care and education. If women have finally started acting on the bullshit state of affairs that a lot of men expect them to carry the massive preponderance of family work, then maybe the answer is to (1) demand that men step up and (2) ease the burdens of all families, in part so that women have help if and when fathers continue to puss out.
Evolution is trying to protect children from pedophiles.
Are they really gonna do this? Are they going to blame literally everything apart from the actual reason? Economic stability of the working class. People living paycheck to paycheck and working multiple jobs have no time or energy to raise kids. And those in a better off position would rather focus on career goals and have kids later, but would choose not to because of the implications of what type of world they would grow up in.
All the women I know who wanted and didn’t have kids got in that situation because they couldn’t find men who could be fathers.
It’s possible that more responsible family planning, waiting until 30, means that immaturity is visible making the pool of available partners smaller than people realize. Whereas when teens and early adults were encouraged to make children, it was done before traits like narcissism and immaturity were apparent. You’d still end up dealing with a shitty coparent but the children would already be made.
Birth rates are collapsing globally. I find most of these analysis articles focus almost entirely on western or first world issues.
Even nations that still have positive population growth have a massive decline from just 20 years ago, from like 7 kids per woman down to 3. They’re having the same decline, they’re just a few decades behind the developed nations, and it’s easy to miss it when they still show up „green“ on the global population growth maps.
So notable population decline is hitting everybody, even nations that have strong traditional values, firm gender roles, little access to modern media/internet, and little access to birth control.
So we can’t blame the economy, housing cost, or medical costs. We can’t blame liberalism and feminism.
I tend to think a global problem that crosses all ideological and economic boundaries must have some kind of global cause.
I wonder about microplastics and pollutants. They’ve detected [high levels of microplastics in human testes](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/20/microplastics-human-testicles-study-sperm-counts), for instance. Sperm counts are declining everywhere.
I love how the comments are all „It can’t be because of gender roles. It’s purely financial, geopolitical, and socio-economical!“ Why can’t it be because of gender roles *too*? OP writes „a big part“. Not „the only reason“. We do see in China, Korea, and Japan how birth rates are plummeting lower than they are in North America and Western Europe. It’s partly because traditional gender roles that are still applied over there are very incompatible with modern capitalism and current workplace requirements. Why would a woman choose to spend her childhood and youth compete at school so she can have a chance at higher education so she can have a stressful job where leaving before the boss is met with side eyes, and then throw it all in the wind the minute she gets married because she needs to care for her in-laws, her own ageing parents, her husband, and her home, on top of caring for children basically as a single mom (because the onus of financial stability will fall on one set of shoulders and we can’t risk angering fat cat like bosses), pushing her into financial dependence?
For real.
The mental load of the modern mother is still heavier than the mental load of the modern father (even if the modern father is heaps better than is dad and grand dad, in average). Adding to that financial and environmental, social, and geopolitical issues, it makes women to be less interested in motherhood.
I don’t see what’s so controversial about that.
It’s a multi faceted problem. One of the facets is gender roles. Yes gender roles issues were worse before, in Western countries, but they still weigh heavy and women’s ability to choose is all things considered brand new. So we see the effects of watching our mothers and grandmothers struggle and we don’t want to deal with that. Some of us, at least.
Where’s the article text, op? I’m not paying FT to read this.
