The headline is deceiving. Lopez-Alt has no problem with Ng’s natural accent. It’s Ng’s „Uncle Roger“ caricature that he is complaining about. And, frankly, yeah, it’s Ng doing a racist stereotype. It’s not like with other comedians who are imitating their friends or family members when they do it. They’ll tell stories about this uncle or their mother and then go and imitate *that* particular person. It’s an imitation of someone they personally know. What Ng is doing is, like I said, a caricature.
And something tells me Ng knows it’s racist because he answered back, „Sorry, I don’t sound white like you, Nephew Kenji, haiyaa.“ That’s an uncalled for defensiveness. Especially, when that isn’t his natural accent. It’s a put on accent. If you have never heard of actual Ng’s accent, [here it is.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjMubm2I8O8)

How disingenuous. He’s being critiqued for his performance as ‘Uncle Roger’ that perpetuates a deeply racist-stereotype. Maybe he feels that’s okay, but own up to it. Hiding behind ‘Malaysian heritage’ is gross.

What’s so gross about this is that Nigel decided to confront him (in character) after Kenji left a small note in the description of his video asking people not to leave comments asking „Uncle Roger“ to review his fried rice because he wasn’t a fan of the character or performance. Instead of respecting that Nigel decided to direct a lot of negative attention his way.

I’m not Asian, so I’m unable to speak to caricatures or disingenuous accents, but I do feel as if „Uncle Roger“ is helping disassociate the negative stereotypes associated with those accents. I have an accent that is normally associated with negative stereotypes, and work hard to reverse those impressions.

As a non-asian person, I always felt a little icky watching his stuff. I had an ex (also not asian) who found him funny so he’d show me videos sometimes and it was just weird. Like why are we watching someone over-exaggerate their accent and speak in broken english while reviewing food and pretending like that’s comedy? I get both sides of the argument re: is this racist, because on one hand he IS Malaysian and born in Malaysia. He’s parodying himself and his culture. At the same time, it’s aimed towards a predominantly American audience, so it feels like he’s tapping into a type of racism or racial prejudice to sell the punchline. At the end of the day people who don’t think asian accents are funny won’t find Uncle Roger funny. It’s true he’s not saying anything derogatory, but anytime your „comedy“ devolves into pure stereotypes you’re really toeing that line. And I use „comedy“ very loosely here, because he barely ever tells actual jokes, and when he does it’s basically „haha I said a stereotypical asian uncle thing“. Maybe it’s funny for people who grew up in that culture or can relate, but otherwise it feels weird just laughing at an accent and stereotypes. Beyond that, as someone who’s really into comedy, it’s so lame and hacky as a comedian to have your whole schtick be a silly voice or racial humour. Racial humour can be funny if done well, but „I’m X race. This is our stereotype. Isn’t that funny?“ is just so tired and lazy. I’ve been to so many sets where comedians rely on that formula for every joke and it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me

I’m not Asian, so my input doesn’t matter much here, but the thing that threw me off about it is that he seems to be upset at Nigel because he feels like the character encourages non-Asian people to mimic Asian stereotypes. Shouldn’t he be upset at those people? I love Uncle Roger, but I would never mimic the accent for a laugh. I mimic my southern family members and have friends who mimic their own Mexican and Kenyan family members. To call for an end to this kind of in-humor seems like respectability politicking to me.

In the video he ends up liking Kenji’s rice and gives him compliments, and Kenji replied to it and left a comment, even taking Nigel up on an offer to make a cooking video together. So I don’t think there’s anything to really be upset over if those two seem to be getting along better.

With shit like “Uncle Roger” it’s obviously a character. You’re going to have people laugh at it because of the fucking absurdity of how over the top it is and then you’re going to have those that laugh because they think it reinforces some ignorant bullshit they actually think.
With that said, the bit is incredibly one noted. If you’ve seen 3 of his videos you’ve seen the extent of the character’s offerings. He’s a bad comedian too because his schtick hasn’t evolved at all from identity comedy.
