Wie in einem kürzlich veröffentlichten Bericht beschrieben Papierein Forscherteam, darunter Physiker der Universität Oxford, arbeitete mit der Outer Solar System Company (OuSoCo), einem Start-up für nukleare Ablenkung, zusammen, um zu analysieren, was mit einem eisernen Weltraumgestein unter verschiedenen Belastungsniveaus passiert.
"Dies ist das erste Mal, dass wir – zerstörungsfrei und in Echtzeit – beobachten konnten, wie sich eine tatsächliche Meteoritenprobe unter extremen Bedingungen verformt, festigt und anpasst." sagt Gianluca Gregori, Physiker an der Universität Oxford und einer der Co-Autoren der Studie.
Der letztendliche Umfang dieser Forschung bleibt hoffentlich theoretisch:
"Die Welt muss in der Lage sein, eine Mission zur nuklearen Ablenkung mit großer Sicherheit durchzuführen, kann jedoch nicht im Voraus einen Test in der realen Welt durchführen. Dies stellt außerordentliche Anforderungen an Material- und Physikdaten," sagt Karl-Georg Schlesinger, Mitbegründer von OuSoCo und Co-Leiter des Forschungsteams.

Yeah, but based on the previous research, and the wide-released documentary about the results, nuking it runs the risk of turning it into 2 asteroids to deal with!

The fact of the matter is: nuking an asteroid is one of the coolest things humanity can do. On that merit we should consider it despite the consequences
