Cutting regulations, services, and taxes are all the right has to offer these days. While those can be useful policy tools, they aren’t universal solutions to every problem, especially since 50 years of trickle down hasn’t left much left to cut.

Pure, blatant pandering. Two issues:
– Why do only GM workers deserve tax relief when they get laid off?
– We have a safety net for layoffs: Employment Insurance

What a dumb political move. If he didn’t single out GM and applied this broadly it’d have a lot more public support. Instead it’s perceived (rightfully so) as a slap in the face to everyone else getting laid off.

Weird they were very against this very idea during Covid. They were also very against this idea whenever Trudeau used it and called it vote buying.
We have a system already it’s called EI if it doesn’t function well enough to mange the problem reform the system.

This is likely a withholding calculation issue, where the withholding is default calculated as if they would get the same payment each pay period.
This is a company problem, not a government problem.

The relief for laid off GM workers – and any other workers for that matter – is employment insurance. If you want to talk about financial relief for people on EI then the conversation should be about all workers, not a specifically cherry-picked group from one employer.

If you disagree with the safety nets Canada has now then change the policy for everyone, don’t just give special handouts to a group of workers.
Those workers are going to get EI plus severance.
I can see the argument for lowering taxes on severance packages, if you make $120 a year, work for 9 months, then get a severance package for $120, your earnings will be $210 for the year. HOWEVER, this can be avoided by taking your severance as a salary continuance or utilizing your RRSP.
