While the US under Donald Trump and some European countries are restricting immigration, Russia’s been grappling with a demographic crisis — about a quarter of the population is retirement age — since the 1990s collapse in the birth rate.
With unemployment at about 2%, one of the lowest levels globally, the economy needs new workers from abroad or it risks hitting real limits on its already sluggish growth.
While authorizations have jumped for the former Soviet republic of Turkmenistan, much of the growth in foreign labor comes from further abroad — including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China.

This problem – the shrinking and aging society with not enough being born and/or dying prematurely to make up for deaths – isn’t a new phenomenon for them.
Was it part of the reason Putin started this war? Could be, re: “2 day special military operation”. Had it lasted 2 days and Putin hadn’t sent over a million of his own to be killed and maimed, it might have staved off some of the inevitable consequences of having such an aging population. There has also been a significant exodus of young Russians who don’t want to die for Putin, adding further to the problem.
Well, now the chickens have come home to roost for Putin and I’m not sorry to say that I do not feel any sympathy for the predicament they are in. I do feel some sympathy for those who will be lured to Russia to try and take up some of this slack because I have no doubt they’ll be fully exploited and worse.

Well to be honest India could probably match Russia’s population and not even miss them. Although I don’t know how happy an Indian coming from a tropical democracy would be working under an authoritarian regime during a Siberian winter.
