The political recalibration of a post-truth information era, where people are extremely  distrustful, has so far favoured liars, criminals, grifters, demagogues, fraudsters, autocrats… all the worst people. They are not exploiting our gullibility, at least not on a systemic level, but our cynicism, our fear, our desire for simple or seductive explanations (e.g. conspiracies).

Skepticism, which is very healthy, requires a balancing of risks and probabilities. But cynicism assumes the worst and accepts defeat. It permits „wrecking ball politics“ to thrives. We are at war with ourselves.  We are also at war with big tech and algorithms that are poisoning us with fear.

We are going to need leaders who do not feed our cynicism and fear. This corrodes the connective tissue of society. We need to look for the people, including some in politics, who take small steps to make our country better, even when we don’t agree with all of the things that person says.

I’m hoping France’s and Spain’s first steps against the oligarchs and their misuse of information systems turn into something effective that spreads to other countries.
