On the one hand this is bad, but it’s happened in nearly every European country, just earlier.

    2. tl;dr no one cares. The government stopped caring (was it ever even?), the speakers don’t care either, so some „displacement“ is bound to happen.

    3. Russification all but killed Belarusian language and wants to do the same with Ukrainian

People of mixed descend are just not interested in ancestors‘ language.

I spoke Russian by birth and also improved my English to be completely fluent. Later, I moved from Russia to the Netherlands and also learned some Dutch. Learning Karelian or any Baltic language never used to be my goal. It was my right to try any of those languages, but I never wanted to.

P.S. My biological father was of mixed Baltic descend, and my maternal great-grandfather was from Karelian lands.

I could think of better cultures to be absorbed into. Russia is a rather depressed culture.

Nobody batted an eye until 2014. Nobody articulated any genuine concern until 2022.
It’s terrible but the outrage is not authentic

My boyfriend is one of them! I’m making efforts to learn his language. Sources are scarce though. I’m not learning Russian.

If this was about English displacing languages all around the world, people in this sub wouldn’t care less. It’s just a knee jerk „Russia bad“ response.

Compound that with the vast majority of killed soldiers in Ukraine being from these same minorities…
