A lot (if not most) of the motivation around back-to-the office from governments and big corpas is to get people who were WFH outside of typical commute range or with arrangements that relied on WFH (like taking care of kids) to quit without needing to actually fire them and therefore deal with severance/unions.

It’s not a surprise there’s a lack of capacity to accommodate the extra hands from the feds, because whatever bullshit about „synergies“ or „teambuilding“ that flies around to justify such policies never had weight to them. And now you now have workers whose productivity will drop precipitously from not having proper workspaces or even be able to physically set up to do their jobs. It’s a shitshow.
