All the while the centers still refuse to allow any new hiring and insist on just picking up more contractors.

You’d have to be insane to work for any government agency that is not directly kissing Trump’s ass right now. If you job is not lip balm applier to the Section Chief, then your job is not safe.

Are they going to rehire the workers they just laid off or hire workers away from their contractors? Where else would expertise reside?

Well after the knuckle dragging dipshits from this administration pressured over a quarter of the NASA workforce to leave (most of whom were senior technical experts) this is not surprising

Wow sure would be nice if like a quarter of the civil servants hadn’t just been forced out for no reason huh funny how that works

If I had to pick a dream place to work growing up it would have been NASA but at the moment it seems more political football than engineering org. Who is looking at what happened to JPL and the turmoil that has surrounded Artemis, SLS, Orion, etc. and thinking „this is the time to sign up“?

This was the main reason I didn’t apply for a job at NASA, for which I had all of the skills for and the PI was part of my PhD committee, was because the job was thru a contractor and not NASA, and the job would not have qualified for PSLF forgiveness.

I remember sitting in a room at a state level project. The hothead manager said, and if you can’t do it, I’ll fire all of you and have a bunch of contractors come in and do it!
We were already all contractors. Not a single state employee besides him on the project.
