    1. I guess what else is someone like this going to say?

It’s more than likely that eventually there will be better relations with the US, but hopefully Canadians will see the need to reduce risk in this relationship by continuing to reverse our social and economic integration.

It won’t be the end of a deep alliance long term hopefully but damage has been done that can’t be undone. It will not be the same.

Jake Sullivan’s was a terrible foreign policy official.

His idea of a ‘middle class foreign policy’ eroded global trade and he was a big proponent of giving Israel whatever it wanted to destroy Gaza, regardless of the civilian death toll.

Canadians should not listen to him. Especially now that he’s out of power.

Trust is broken. The fact that the US system can’t restrain someone like Trump means that every other country needs to assume another Trump every few years, and prepare accordingly. The only way they can restore trust is to drastically change there system so that nobody like Trump can act with impunity again.

Sullivan is part of the problem. His anemic actions on Ukraine are why we exited the Biden era with no meaningful change anywhere. fuck him

    6. Lol they really think they can just elect a Democrat next time and everyone will forget their fun little foray into fascism

They still don’t get it. No one wants or trusts them as deal makers or power brokers. Their word and legal agreements mean nothing. The only way to reestablish good will is likely going to be a decade of good faith proper negotiation and stable sane governance. And even after that there is a generation of Canadians who won’t forgive or forget what happened.

Not to mention it’s very unlikely that stability is headed their way anytime soon

“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation, is over.” – Mark Carney

What exactly do they think this means?! It is OVER. Don’t make us get a restraining order, you creepy, weird, abusive Americans. We have moved on.

America would need to do a full political purge of MAGA before we could ever trust them again.

Knowing that America was only 4 years away from doing this all again is an unacceptable risk for our nation and our economy.

    9. Even electing a Democratic trifecta won’t eliminate the fact that 50% of the country is somewhere between ignorant, tolerant or outright supportive of an authoritarian/fascist federal government. Further, they’re going to be hooked on the tariff revenue because they’re descending deeper into a fiscal mess due to insanely high debt.

The only hope from within that I see is that after the 2028 elections the Dems somehow have the trifecta, they abolish the Senate filibuster, pass major electoral reform, voting rights, comprehensive immigration reform? reform and pack the Supreme Court, and grant Puerto Rico and DC statehood with the additional 4 Senators that creates. That’s the only way to maybe restore some function to their democracy and nullify some of the huge inherent electoral advantage that the GOP has at the federal level, and prevent an easy return to power by the GOP. It’s a very tall order.

For their own democracy they need to make substantial changes to ensure this can’t happen again. (Turning back Citizens United would be a good start. And aggressively prosecuting ALL involved to the full extent of the law and Constitution.)
Once they begin to correct things domestically, they can gradually rebuild internationally. Until then, it would be foolish to change our current course.

It’s gonna take decades to undo the damage to the relationship. It would’ve nice if they had a government that wasn’t actively trying to crush us

    12. >“I’m not going to disagree, in fact, that China is a bit more predictable right now than what we are seeing come out of the White House. But being predictable isn’t inherently a good thing,” he said.

Oh, please, do explain why being predictable can be bad. Particularly in terms of international trade, banking and business.

      >“One of the things that is predictable about China is that if a country does something that China takes offence to, China will react in ways that are coercive, that weaponize their supply chains and their interdependencies,” he added. “And Canada has just quite recently gone through that experience.”

If China were *unpredictable* than they *might still react coercively*. At least when they’re predictable you have certainty that they will! China reacting poorly to criticism isn’t an outcome that is necessarily tied to their predictability.

If he’s confident enough to say this, then he’s clueless about what the people of Canada think. This kind of statement is typical of the US and only serves to make Canadians more resentful by downplaying how badly they have misstepped, like they’re going through a rough patch rather than showing their country is fundamentally broken. If they can elect Trump not once but twice, they are not trustworthy and will not be trustworthy for a long time.

    14. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Electing Trump once was an aberration, but doing it twice is a trend we best not ignore. The arrogance of Americans currently not in power is stupefying given what has happened in the last year. The Davos speech struck a chord in Canada and around the world, and indicates a way forward in the vacuum created by the current administration. America, you fucked it up in such a way it is beyond fixing, because there is no guarantee it won’t happen again, and a good probability it will.

    15. It ***was*** not inevitable. It is now. The only way out now is serious reform of US institutions (be it education, voting, etc.), which the US is incapable of doing.

    16. Spaghetti_Dealer2020 on

This kind of utterly limp response is a perfect encapsulation of the Biden administration’s overall failures and why I don’t have much faith that anything meaningful will actually change even if the Democrats win back control. I don’t know why this isn’t more obvious to their voters either, because frankly if any one of our MPs talked about America the way that Chuck Schumer talks about Israel, there would very likely be mass calls to have them investigated for foreign influence.

So in short. “I understand your are mad at us but don’t do anything that could hurts our futur relation that we don’t know what will look like…”

    18. QuaidCohagen on

Dems need to move on. At this point it doesn’t look like they will ever be in any position to do anything ever again. Especially when you consider that they are only the lesser of two evils .
