    > Aerials freestyle skier Chris Lillis also told USA Today he felt conflicted, telling the newspaper that he’s “proud to represent our country” but “heartbroken” over the immigration crackdowns.
“I love the USA and I think I would never want to represent a different country in the Olympics,” said Lillis, a gold medalist at Beijing 2022. “With that being said, a lot of times athletes are hesitant to talk about political views and how we feel about things. I feel heartbroken about what’s happened in the United States. … I think that as a country we need to focus on respecting everybody’s rights and making sure that we’re treating our citizens as well as anybody with love and respect.”

    > “It’s a little hard,” freeski halfpipe competitor Hunter Hess said, USA Today reported on Friday. “There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of. Wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything going on in the U.S.”

    > Cross-country ski gold medalist Jessie Diggins felt the need to clarify which aspects of America she was representing at the Milan Cortina Games.
“I want to make sure you know who I’m racing for when I get to the start line at the Olympics,” she wrote on Instagram recently. “I’m racing for an American people who stand for love, for acceptance, for compassion, honesty and respect for others. I do not stand for hate or violence or discrimination.”

Great responses! These athletes work so hard for this moment and it’s a shame that our country isn’t one they can be exactly proud of in this moment.

I want to say they should boycott, however I understand this is a once in a lifetime opportunity at the peak of their performance

I think they should be able to request a different song be played instead of the national anthem when they win.

  4. They should show their displeasure at the medal ceremonies. Like at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968.

Fu*k ‘em. They should blame the majority of Americans who voted for that clown. I’ll be happy if every one of these athletes gets booed every time.

I get it, I’m not even in the mood to root for the US. I hope we lose every category, which I understand screws over many many hardworking athletes, but that’s my gut feeling.

Some would say “they can sit out in protest,” but that’s really unfair when they train hard to represent THEIR america and not whatever shit is going on out of their control

There are better uses of their participation though. See: Berlin Olympics and the Raised fist against oppression

  8. Then quit? I stopped riding for a shop in university because the owner got sussed out as a bigot. It’s really easy, just say “not interested” and move on. Sure it’ll suck but if you’re at an Olympic skill level I think you’ll be fine with all your other preexisting sponsors and accolades.

This is how I feel about my past military service right now unfortunately
