    1. > A diet rich in olive oil, nuts, seafood, whole grains and vegetables has previously been linked to a number of health benefits. However, until now there has been limited evidence of how it might affect the risk of all forms of stroke.

      >The study involved 105,614 women in California with an average age of 53 at the start of the study, who had no history of stroke.
      >
      >Participants were given a score of zero to nine based on how closely they followed the Mediterranean diet. They received points for consuming above the overall population average in specific categories – wholegrain cereals, fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil and fish – and if they drank a moderate amount of alcohol.
      >
      >They also received points for consuming a below-average amount of red meat and dairy products. In total, 30% of participants had scores of six to nine, the highest group, and 13% had scores of zero to two, the lowest group.
      >
      >Participants were followed for an average of 21 years. After adjusting for other factors that could affect stroke risk, such as smoking, physical activity and high blood pressure, those in the highest group were 18% less likely to have a stroke than those in the lowest group.
      >
      >They were also 16% less likely to have an ischemic stroke and 25% less likely to have a hemorrhagic stroke, according to the study.

The Mediterranean Diet is so boring. It gets way more attention in the West than it deserves, given that it’s only one of many healthy diets in this big world we live in. I think the sole focus on the Med diet is an unintentional signal to people in other cultures that they are unhealthy because of their food culture, and they need to eat Med food for now on. That’s just not the case.

    3. By my math, its 25% off a 0.8% chance at hemorrhagic stroke specifically, and the researchers really didn’t have a way to isolate diet as the causal factor here.

      Terrible reporting.

    4. This has been Zorba Pastor on your health!

(I hear that in my head when I hear Mediterranean diet)

    5. I think this is mostly because of the lack of preservatives in Mediterranean diets. Food is generally more fresh but with a shorter shelf life.

Yeah this is peak diet pretty much but meat n veggies is pretty solid. If not starch oriented veggies over 40% of them or such.

    7. I like the taste of Mediterranean. Unfortunately, it often leaves me incontinental afterwards 🙁

Only if you couple it with a smoke and an espresso.

You need the whole Mediterranean package if you want the benefits.

    9. Ah, and if only I liked the way it tastes. Oh well. Still very useful knowledge to have.

I would be curious about all cause mortality but the study is silent. Other cohort studies have found 20-30% reduction.
