Russia should have an economy similar to Saudi Arabia’s if it were not for its stupid leadership.

People keep saying how Russia’s going to economically collapse, then there’s others who point out that people have been saying it’s to to collapse for a few years now.
Russia is the largest country in the world with countless resources, a massive reserve of gold, and has over 100 million people despite the war, draft dodgers, and brain drain.
There are however signs that Russia hasn’t been doing well economically recently, like using gold reserves to pay for some services and some oil revenue being distributed.
I see this war as a sort of race, whether Russia’s economy can outlast Ukraine’s manpower, which is why Ukraine has likely been targeting oil pipelines and extraction/production facilities in recent years

“Russian leader Vladimir Putin has admitted that economic growth slowed to 1% in 2025”.
So it’s likely much lower

1% growth when you’ve got financial taps wide open, spending every dime in the reserves should push the economy into rocket growth (even if it is unsustainable). This is a sign that sanctions are working – unable to import enough capital goods the country is cannibalizing itself and mortgaging its future to prosecute this pointless war. Best case scenario for Russia, if Ukraine surrendered tomorrow (and there’s no sign Ukraine is going to surrender in the next few years), there’s no undoing demographic damage and the cost to rebuild the occupied territories to an even remotely productive level that they could start to pay back the costs of the war would cost untold hundreds of billions of dollars.

Turns out it isn’t great for your economy to build things like BMPs, ship them to Ukraine, fill them with your able bodied men, and get them blown up.
Couple of issues with that plan, it seems
