Bessent has Trump’s weenie so far down his throat I think he might start to choke on it. Ordinarily, I’d be concerned about someone choking…

How anyone can still think that Canada should pursue the US as its main trading partner is beyond me

Is anyone surprised? We’re not dealing with sane, rational people here..
There will always be another excuse and perceived slight. US is a country lead by literal petty man-children right now.

I believe the US Supreme Court is scheduled to finally issue their ruling on the legality of the tarrifs on or around Feb. 20. Gonna be interesting if they get shot down, although they were supposed to rule on it weeks ago and pushed it back, a signal of dissention among the justices.

The supreme court needs to stop being quislings and make their ruling of tariffs of this ilk not being legal, because they obviously arent when the dude admits he increased them on Swiss because the leader irked him. Its an absolute joke.

US officials actively removing any incentive Canada has to deal with them is one hell of a negotiating tactic.

So their view is – Your (Canada’s) tariffs on our goods are unjust, and should be removed. BUT ours (US) on your goods are completely valid.
They really think trade with the US is paid privilege, but their goods should be allowed to flow freely everywhere.

I mean this shouldn’t be shocking. Trump has always said there’s nothing we can do to make him drop all tariffs and if we make a deal with the US we have to accept there will be tariffs still. I don’t think any deal he’s made with any country has removed tariffs completely.
Trumps entire economic philosophy is built around tariffs and he’s talked about how much he loves tariffs since at least the 80s. It’s fulfilling a life long dream for him.

Canada and the US have (had) one of the most stable and prosperous strategic and economic partnerships on earth. We’re ideologically and geographically aligned in such a way that makes us the envy of the world.
How absolutely mind-bogglingly stupid you would have to be to throw that away over such petty nonsense just breaks my brain. A strong relationship between our countries is MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL in every way.

Bessent responded by claiming Canadian tourism is down because “the Canadian economy is doing poorly” after a Nevada senator asked about the tariffs effecting tourism.
So does anyone want to tell him why the Canadian economy had a bad year? Maybe it was because Canada’s largest trade partner started a trade war with them?
Regardless, I saved $20,000 in 2025 for an international trip in 2026….it won’t be spent in America!

The gaslighting coming out of the American administration on Canada allowing a minuscule amount of Chinese EVs is hilarious.
These EVs cannot be exported to America.
We are only allowed China to import into Canada 49k in the first year and a portion of them (about 30%) have to be low cost retailing at less than 35k. I don’t thank any American manufacturers sell an auto in this price range anymore.
Over a period of 4-5 yrs they can gradually increase imports to Canada to approx 70K units p.a.. Still a drop in the bucket when measured against total annual new car sales in Canada.
Neither Honda or Toyota, both which have major manufacturing presence in Canada are panicking about the allowance for Chinese EVs. So why is America?
Bessent and co are also constantly mouthing about Canada and China signing a free trade agreement. Canada has not signed a free trade agreement with China and has not indicated any interest in doing so.
I don’t think there has been a single truthful statement by any member of the US administration in context of the various trade agreements Canada & China are contemplating between them.
And of course let us not forget America has signed and is pursuing numerous trade agreements with China at this time. But we are supposed to be blind to that….
Trump – Lying. It is that simple.

Short term Canada will feel some pain from our decoupling from American trade in specific industries like auto and steel etc. On the flip side there are also many benefits we are starting to see. More trade with China and we can maintain independence in our dairy and media industries . Canada was a wealthy nation before NAFTA and will still be a wealthy nation even with more limited trade and integration with the American economy.

Canada needs to tell the US in no uncertain terms we are adjourning our decision on buying fighter jets and joining the new critical minerals organization the US is creating, until AFTER negotiations on a new CUSMU agreement are complete.

Lets be realistic. This is about more than trade. We have higher tariffs applied to us outside of CUSMA than most nations. The US is pursuing minerals deals with countries when we could provide the same at lower cost.
This is trump doing what he said he would do….seek to destroy our economy to effect a takeover of our country.
And why, exactly?
Minerals, resources, energy and water to cool the data centers of a handful of billionaires. Its not a plan to be a cherished 51st state, its a plan to be an open pit mine. Its not about defense or security…we ve been a best friend to this nation since the beginning.
At the end of the day its about ending our nation, our right to self determination and they’re eager to do that for the dirt in our ground. Let’s not be confused about who we are dealing with.
