I don’t know much about this, but if NDP says it, it must be wrong. They are typically on the wrong side of every good decision.

    2. Nobody cares what the irrelevant far left radicals in the NDP thinks. Already not an official party, who knows what they’ll shrink to after the next one. May they just go away.

    3. I mean We REALLY should, The F35 well great on paper is a Hanger Queen currently.

    4. Remarkable_Vanilla34 on

Question, why is it down to only these 2 models? Seems like if we are dropping the f35 and willing to take on older technology, we would have more options?

    5. I have to disagree with the NDP here. Their choice is purely political and optics with the Swedish fighter. Reality is the military wants F35’s. The experts have spoken and they did a comparison the F35 outperformed the Gripen in every aspect. Everyone says they can’t perform in the arctic but the US has a strong Air Force presence in Alaska. All the Nordics except Sweden fly F35. SAAB has been involved with corruption (Look it up regarding Brazil) and they have not fulfilled their promises to Brazil with jobs.

Trump will be gone in 3 years and we will be stuck with inferior jets.

    6. CanOfWhoopus on

Who cares? Just get the best aircraft according to military experts. Aircraft are technical questions, not political ones.

    7. I mean why even entertain the F35 contract given how Trump has been treating Canada‽
The more we depend on the US the more they’ll have that ability to fuck us over, be it today, tomorrow, or any time in the near future.

That good neighbour bs is long dead and gone, folks that can’t see past this and thinks we should bend over backwards whether you be liberal, greens, ndp, conservative, progressive conservative, bq, whatever other party lines you believe align with your values are absolutely and totally cooked.

The ndp also thinks groceries would be 30% cheaper if we nationalized grocery stores with zero understanding that it would take hundreds of billions of borrowed money to establish the logistics, warehousing and retail infrastructure to do that and the interest on that alone would be
more than all the other grocers profits combined. They’re an unserious party living im a fantasy land and just grasping at whatever they can to appeal to people’s emotions.

First of all, we already have a contract. Secondly, we rely on the us for military protection. We haven’t met the minimum defense spend to ba nato menber since the 80s but yet we remain a member. The U.S. could easily strongarm us out out of NATO if we did this. It’s all just pure fantasy and politically motivated nonsense.

    9. I suppose if you dont look at the technical specifications it makes sense. However the technical specifications are exactly why we should purchase the fighters. These decisions should be about putting the best tools in the most capable hands NOT politics and virtue signaling

Why is anyone saying anything on this? This is defense procurement. Let’s leave it to the professionals working within the DND and the pilots who will be flying them. The procurement process is already a nightmare, adding this political chaos does nothing helpful. There are plenty of valid reasons for both, we’ve heard them all already… Let the experts do their thing.

Who am I to weigh in on which nuclear power project we should go with as a mechanic? My opinion means nothing. Same idea here.

    11. I think we should take the gripen over the F35 purely because I wouldn’t want to depend on the US for spare parts. We could end up in a scenario where the US threatens no delivery of parts because Trump is upset.

    12. So glad the NDP isn’t making any decisions. Look at the disaster in BC.

    13. Bishopjones2112 on

Ahh how about we let the RCAF look at their needs and tell us what meets the needs and let that happen. The way it should be.

    14. prob_wont_reply_2u on

“The ability of the Americans to block (a sale) would be highest with the Gripen because of the engine,” said defence analyst Martin Shadwick, who is retired from teaching strategic studies at York University in Toronto. “Rafale would have the least American content.”

    15. Dank_sniggity on

I honestly think we should do both. America is looking to fill a shortage of non-stealth aircraft as well. They do have their downsides operationally vs traditional fighters.

    16. Keystone-12 on

Both…. lets do both. Its expensive, but fighters are the core of a modern military.

    17. VesaAwesaka on

You either should want the F-35 or something cheaper that does the same things as the Gripen.

Why would we want to pay a 5th generation price for a 4th generation aircraft when we can buy cheaper 4th gen aircrafts.

    18. Redditagonist on

US are already threatening tariffs on aircrafts. We need independent fighter plans.

    19. Old-Tiger9847 on

Why buy a jet that can be critically nullified by the seller? Wake up, the yankee doodle nazi are not our friends and are a major liability to the sovereignty our country. They are the bad guys now!

    20. Why would you buy from a country that threatens your sovereignty? The next time he opens his big mouth about the 51st state, suspend the deal, at the very least.

    21. The Gripen is trash. It’s better to not buy any fighter jet than have a Gripen. Think about its geopolitical role, what can it do against any adversary? Nothing at all so why go with the useless option. At least the F-35 gives us superiority or parity with the top tier of jets. The Gripen is a token fighter jet that checks a box and that’s it

    22. Altruistic_Report827 on

I agree, why would we move forward with the purchase when they could withhold parts, maintenance and equipment and leave it grounded on a whim.

    23. Fabulous-Raccoon-788 on

South Korea seems pretty eager to work with us, someone should be emailing about the kf-21 to see how it does in the Arctic.

    24. This is so moot. Its just a political statement. The US has hundreds of planes like the F35 and F22 plus thousands of older gen fighters. Even if we had all 88 of these and they were completely free of US parts and interference, then we would still be unable to defend ourselves in an aerial war against the US. It would break us to even acquire this capability. The only way in which this even matters is in the eyes of Canadian voters and a small protest to American capital interests. It would therefore be better to toe the line, acquire the best hardware and protest their capital interests in other ways in which we have more leverage…like tech, pharmaceuticals.

    25. AbnormallyBendPenis on

NDP: Lets compromise our next 4 decades of air defence and military to send a message to the orange baby who will be gone in 3 years.

RCAF already did extensive competition and vetting program on these jets, F35 produced the best results based on what Canada needs. Even other Nordic countries decided not to operate Grippen and choosed F35. Let’s stop making dumb decisions, defence is based on capabilities, not emotions.

    26. Canada is getting F35s what’s the question is if we should get the entire order.

If we are doing a mixed fleet, then we should fill a squadron, with additional training and spare aircraft

    27. media_ballin on

Lol are we worried about the us taking over this country? If yes, then don’t buy the f35. If no, then buy it and figure out a way to hack it like the Israelis seem to have.

    28. VanBenchArmrest on

I hate that this is so politicized. The F-35 is simply way better than any available fighter jet.

I could get behind having a mixed fleet but that presents its own problems.
