Because it’s Ireland.
I’m confused, weren’t they already banned because they’re not road legal?! No lights or licence plate on them. Enforcement is just the issue as ever.
Most laws and regulations are written in blood. It’s not the first and it won’t be the last.
This was bound to happen, it was a tragedy just waiting to happen. Ever since that poor guy some years ago who was left [brain damaged](https://www.msn.com/en-ie/sports/general/man-who-suffered-catastrophic-injuries-when-scrambler-bike-landed-on-him-settles-action-for-5-2m/ar-AA1OwqUB) by some moron landing on his head with his scrambler bike.
We brought in new legislation on these no length ago, but as usual, it didn’t go far enough. Just like the recent legislation on vapes, it was no sooner law than it was realised that more changes were needed.
Bring in the law all you want, they still won’t enforce it.
This is just for optics and it’s shameful.
Agree. Why the emotive naming when there’s already so much grief caused? Who knows how the family feel about it, I can’t imagine, just hopefully they don’t consider it disrespectful.
Law to make criminal motorbike activity a crime.
Plans for enabling the guards to enforce it? None.
Plans for jailing / punishing those who break the law? None.
If the existing laws in place were enforced, this poor girl may not have been killed. Are we to believe that any new laws will be enforced also. Its only a matter if time until another person is killed by a scrambler.
I don’t understand what banning them does? Surely the gardai need to be able to ram them off the road with full protection should one of the little angels get hurt. And the parents should have to pay for any damages to cars etc. See how long they’ll be on the roads then.
Loads of laws against scramblers on public roads.
Licence, tax, insurance, helmet, lights, numberplates before dangerous driving etc. even come into play.
The problem is 100% garda resourcing. Gardai aren’t being pursuit trained, aren’t allowed chase little scumbags incase they or a third party are hurt.
This law will change nothing whatsoever, except making criminals out of genuine guys who go up the mountains to do their own thing out of harms way will be nabbed.
They are already illegal to use on public roads without tax, insurance etc.
There’s no enforcement now, and if there won’t be after this law comes in, it’s completely pointless.
Even if enforcement did occur, the majority of those involved are under 18 and will not be prosecuted. Waste of time.
That’s how Ireland works….we have only built roads and bypasses once a unacceptable number of people have died on the original road first.
I remember 10 years ago there was two young lads killed at Christmas time in Separate accidents 15 and 16, one died Christmas morning after receiving it as a present, then was the time to regulate
Can we just change the law to allow garda to stop them in cases of dangerous and illegal driving. If the stop turns out to be fatal then that’s not the gardas issue, public safety should take priority.
They can be illegal to even own, hell make them as illegal as murder, but the courts will still let you off with a half decent sob story
They should make it illegal to drive through pedestrian crossings at double the speed limit
It took someone to die for politicians to do this and do it this quick. Something that should have been done ages ago.
What a bunch of cunts.
Wasn’t some poor lad brain damaged a good few years ago after a scrambler literally landed on him in a public park? They should have been banned back then. Typical of this mis-managed kip of a country.
I’m not sure if it’s still done, but for a while the London police were allowed to knock people off mopeds with their cars:
https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/met-police-allowed-to-knock-moped-thieves-off-bikes-at-high-speed/37559059.html
If there is no other way to stop people then in the long run doing this would save lives. I think we just assume we couldn’t do it but it would be politically popular and I think it is ethically sound. In the long run fewer people would be hurt.
I’m sorry but I don’t believe in this sort of politics in where because some sort of tragedy happens that means we make it illegal. The government isn’t here to babysit us.
I’d really prefer they didn’t name this law after that gorgeous girl unless it’s going to be fully enforced which I seriously doubt. It’ll make a mockery of her memory so if I was Grace’s parents I’d be reluctant to put her name to this, it’s been brought in very quick too
Would this also mean open public spaces where people walk/run?
And that they weren’t probably dear with after the poor Lithuanian fella nearly a decade ago
>Ilabek Avetian had just moved to Ireland from Lithuania to begin a new life when the scrambler came over a hill and landed on his head – while he was sunbathing in Darndale Park, Coolock, on June 9, 2018.

Believe this is a clarification of existing law, extending where they are illegal, making it more straightforward for Gardai to seize them and adding that they will be destroyed instead of just held.
Not sure if theres changes to how Gardai can pursue them as they have to consider endangering the public in a chase.
And like magic, scramblers were never used in public places again.
We should bring in a law to build 60,000 houses a year. This approach seems like a good solution to fixing problems.
I used to see the lad that did this every single day doing wheelies on the Finglas dual carriageway with his mates. Nothing was ever done. They showboated and almost hit pedestrians constantly and it is now only a problem to the guards because it’s resulted in someone’s death.
Scramblers are already illegal, this is an enforcement issue.
The main flaw is that the nick nacks speeding around on these have zero respect for the law or others. Sieze and crush a must better law
The only way to honor Grace is an enforcment of the law, including E Scooters and E Bikes.
Putting innocent pedestrians and other road users first, not the riders.
Sprinkling her name on top of a hollow law means nothing.
When we hear whinges and moans from people being stopped and having scramblers, ebikes, and escooters confiscated.
This is a disgraceful PR government stunt, a podium talk with all the cameras look at us mentality.
It’s a law on top of a law. If they have the scrambler out in public they have already broken numerous laws. It’s enforcement that we the public want, it’s a Garda unit trained up to do hard tactical stops, it’s early morning raids, it’s stop seize and crush the units.
Another minister’s signature on a bit of paper isn’t going to reduce one single death until they allow the Garda more powers in their method of arrest.
Ok.
Good to see it happening nonetheless
The State will count to ten.
…and it will change absolutely nothing due to lack of enforcement. It’s really embarrassing to see the Irish go out on the streets to protest when the water charges are to be introduced but when the actual law is not being enforced in the country for years due to incompetent government? Nah that’s fine, it’s grand; better keep voting them in! Make it make sense.
Ass covering optics by the government
Job done.
ln Ireland they have to wait for a fatality before a law is enforced.
Let’s not act like this doesn’t make sense. The government isn’t going to do anything hard like actually tackling the problem- either legally, or by facilitating enforcement. Pretending to make a law will get great headlines and a nice photo op. And that’s all that matters
Absolute nonsense. A press release to look like tire doing something when the law is already there and not enforced. Irrationally angry about this one. It’s so symptomatic of the gov approach to basically everything.
The 👏Law 👏Already👏Exists👏
Most people made fun of the „Make crime illegal“ guy but I think that this was exactly the point he was trying to make
No idea why they need another law its already illegal to drive excessive speeds on uninsured motorcycle, without helmet by unlicensed riders.
Bike theft is also illegal.
Laws exist, whats missing is enforcement and consequences for those who still do it.
May she rest in peace and her family gets through this with some resemblance of like without her.
Typical of Ireland. Takes a death for anything to change.
Reminds me of this.
