When he was PM of the Netherlands Rutte gave Royal Dutch Shell the go ahead to invest billions in the Nordstream 2 pipeline, just 11 months after the Russian shoot-down of the Dutch airliner MH17. This was despite plenty of countries warning that NS 2 was giving Russia a gas transit route that no longer ran through Ukraine, and hence would embolden them to make further attacks against the country.

So what we see here is essentially the 2026 equivalent of making Tony Blair the Middle East peace envoy.

I’m disappointed that Mark Rutte felt fine echoing and endorsing Trumps narrative that he was the sole reason for NATO rearmament. There is playing politics and there is playing yourself, he played himself.
