  1. [CNN reports](https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/china-ban-hidden-car-door-063413837.html): China is banning hidden door handles on all cars sold in the country, becoming the first country in the world to target the feature – which was popularized by Tesla but has for years drawn concern over safety risks.

The hidden door handles are a signature feature of Tesla’s vehicles, and the ban comes as Elon Musk’s company reports declining worldwide sales and struggles with fierce competition in China, its second-biggest market.

Hooray. Fuck these stupid „innovations“ that introduce more problems

  3. it’s a logical step from a safety perspective. hidden or electronic door handles may look cool and aerodynamic, but if they rely on power and the electronics fail in a crash, it becomes a real risk to people’s lives. there have already been several cases where occupants couldn’t get out or others couldn’t help them because the handles didn’t work.

This is a good thing because those are pieces of shit

Same with the emergency door release

I recently heard this news story of kids burning to death in a tesla because they couldn’t open the doors from the inside or outside. It was cybertruck so they couldn’t get the windows broken in time either.

  6. Good!

There’s a reason why car door handles converged on the mostly similar current design: they work, you know how to use them by looking at them.

With hidden handles I have to explain to nearly every person who gets in my car how to open the door.

Good, as someone with mobility issues in my hands they’re inaccessible as hell. Hope other places follow suit.

Good. Elon Musk can put hidden door handles on his Mars rocket ships if he wants to. He can fly to Mars and open and close his stupid doors all day long there, that would be grand.

  9. My understanding of the main issue is these in Teslas are electronic so can fail in crashes or other power failures instances. So while the aerodynamic improvement from them is minimal, if the design was changed to be mechanical, they’d be fine if you like the style element.

This may be more of a deliberate hinderance to Tesla than a real attempt at improved safety. Domestic makers have adopted similar handles but its still a tesla trademark more than anything.

  10. Thank you! What were they thinking making this. Whenever an uber pulls up with handles like this or even similar im like how do i open this both inside car and outside cuz they keep changing for these cars i have to ask driver or keep fiddling

If it were an emergency its game over

  11. This new law applies for the rear inside mechanical door release in Model 3 and Y, as it is literally abysmal and could kill you. The front door and rear outside handle are already mechanical.

  12. After this can we get rid of buttons and go back to normal shifters for cars?

Honestly if I had to buy an electric car I would like it to be we as little fancy stuff as possible. It’s all good and nice when it works but can be fragile, break and consumes electricity that I prefer to use for the mileage. Basically a 2010 car or so, with all the safety devices and an electric engine.

  14. Good. It’s a stupid design and should never have been implemented. Too fussy

  15. Fucking good. From the first time i got into a Tesla i argued that electric door handles are a death trap. To which my Tesla-apologist friend pointed out that there *are* emergency mechanical handles, they’re just hidden for aesthetic reasons. To which i replied, that’s what you need in an emergency, *secret* door handles. And of course in the back seat – you know, where you put the kids – the secret emergency door handle is super especially secretly hidden behind a panel, which i’m sure will be an especially fun puzzle in the dark when the electrics have gone out and the only light you have is the fire.

  16. I own an ioniq 5 with similar handles, but I am pretty sure they are mechanically activated. It sucks when it’s cold though

I still don’t understand why Tesla even wanted this kind of door handle design in the first place.

  18. I hate them. Good move. Just give me fucking handles that I can actually handle, that’s why they are called handles

  19. Lots of people install door poppers cause it makes their cars look cooler.

  20. Shaven door handles have always been illegal in Aus, not sure how these even got through.

i hope more countries take this on i’m so tired of deciphering how to exit the vehicle every time i get into a new car
