This is most unfortunate. Actually, one can argue there is an upside and a downside. Costa Rican President-elect Laura Fernandez is right wing and has promised to emulate Nayib Bukele of El Salvador. Violent, drug-related crime statistics will drop. However, the Fernandez regime, like that of Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, will simultaneously be systematically undermining the Constitution, due process and the rule of law.

  3. Damn. I was going to  plan a trip to Costa Rica next year. Guess I’ll put that on the back burner. Any similar locales?

There are less people in Costa Rica than in the Boston metro area, and the Boston metro area is not even top 10 in the U.S.

    >Fernández campaigned on continuing the policies of the term-limited Chaves.

    >The historically peaceful Central American nation’s crime surge in recent years was a major issue in the campaign. Some voters faulted Chaves‘ presidency for failing to bring those rates down, but many see a continuation of his confrontational style as the best chance for Costa Rica to tame the violence.

So crime has surged in recent years under Chaves, people are upset and want to reduce crime, so they vote for their person pledging to continue the policies of Chaves.

    That makes sense

Breaking: redditors who live outside Costa Rica and are unaffected by events there get mad about Costa Ricans exercising their democracy.

  7. Just when they got fully renewable energy too. Hopefully that doesn’t get fucked.

  8. Another populist who will turn into a mass murderer.

Everyone who voted for her is irredeemable human filth brainwashed by social media style campaigning.

Another day of proof that there’s too many stupid people on this Earth. Condolences to those who didn’t vote for this in Costa Rica

It’s something about the Central and South America and voting for right wing politicians playbook that truly needs to be studied.

You could have a Lula da Silva if properly pushed but they actively vote for someone with “promises” that then completely ignore what the people want and then they are back to where they started or worse.

It happens time and time again and it’s truly a remarkable thing to be honest.

Remember this: Peter Theil and Elon Musk are funding this extreme right wing campaigns around the globe.

They want war. They want us all dead or enslaved. That is reality.
