It would be wild if the United States’ continued unhinged conservative turn causes this. A good deal of the history of the modern world is the inability of Europe to get along.

Why are we going directly to USE from USB? Why skip so many in the middle?

Also side note, they do realize it spells ‚use‘ right? I don’t know but labeling your country(s) as USE doesn’t seem to be the kind of messaging you want to send to foreign power.

The idea of a large amount of different people being forced together under one country is not working very well for us here in the U.S. It would be better for us if we had individual states that governed themselves rather than what we have now.

First civil war start with deciding which language the federation is going to use.

It’s a start for Europe to wean itself away from too much dependency to US.

There is no forcing this, its not happening right now. But give it few generations? And it will happen organically, for a much better result overall.

I agree but we need a different name. We’re not some follow up bullshit experiment, we’re the real deal

I think the EU would function better if there was some mergers between countries, especially with the continued growth east and potential south. A federation of regional powers if you will. Less bickering between each regional power about who subsidizes who etc with common defense but with some differences in laws by regions.

    Like Portugal + Spain

    Sweden+Norway+Finland+Denmark + Estonia+ Latvia maybe.

United States of Europe? Cool, can we start by federalizing the plug sockets or is that too spicy?

  10. It’s worked out great for the US so far, why shouldn’t we try it out over here as well? /s

  11. The EU has to lose the veto across all its decision-making bodies and switch to majority voting. Make it 55% to pass to avoid close results in the Council and all other bodies where governments vote. Also weight the number of Council/government votes each country has by population, like how the German Bundesrat works.

Outlier governments should not be able to veto all of Europe.

There needs to be a constitutional court and other constitutional guards to protect liberal democracy as a non-negotiable pillar of EU governance and culture. There also needs to be clear processes for the majority and/or the court to impose penalties and suspend the membership rights of countries that betray their duty to uphold liberal democratic values.

I dream of a federation between the UE, the UK, Iceland, Norway, Canada, Australia and New-Zealand, with some special guests who could integrate some programs like Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

  13. This has always been on the card that the EU will eventually become a Federation. It’s one of the reasons why Brexit happened as people there didn’t want to be a part of a superstate.

However for mainland Europeans it makes a lot of sense since so many of their laws and security relies on the EU.

I can see a future where the EU is essential a super-state and the individual countries are just effectively like US states with their own state laws but ultimately subordinate the the EU Federal laws.

That might stop countries like Russia trying to invade parts of them. It would be Russia trying to invade Alaska and hoping the US just doesn’t hit them back hard.

Given the dangerous times we live in, this might be the best bet for European security.

I’m american so maybe I wouldn’t know but why the hell can’t they just keep the name European Union? Like is it just me that thinks that sounds nicer anyway? United States of Europe would be representative of all the wrong things, and I don’t think we either want to be nor should be copied.

  15. No thanks I don’t want my public services and welfare state (already in bad state due to free market’s cult) to disappear

A Europe that is a USA-like union could be a true superpower. But it’s too good to be true.

  17. DO NOT DO THIS. Consolidated power is how the USA got to where it’s at now.

Aaaah can California join? We obviously won’t stop being part of the old USA but we want to be friends with you.

At least don’t call it United States of Europe and be more original with a name like European Community or Federation of Europe

  20. uselessRobot8668 on

Can we start calling it the European dream? This American Nightmare is a bit much for me.

  21. AntiSnoringDevice on

He called it a federal Europe, not United States. That name is cursed and old

  22. I think America is a fine example of why United States doesn’t work. I get they want to bring balance amongst the big three but there’s many more elements to this and the potential for corruption and absolute control is far too high a risk.

It will never happen. Too many old feuds and cultures that don’t like each other.
