We have signed every nuclear disarmament treaty there is. The optics of walking back on that the very first time we are threatened would be terrible. I don’t want to look like cowards

In what world would the US sit by and allow Canada to develop nuclear weapons and delivery systems? And I don’t see how it could be done in a clandestine manner, plus the whole point of having nukes is so people know you have them.

I’m deeply skeptical we could pull it off without triggering a very dangerous confrontation with the United States. As much as I appreciate the sentiment behind such a move, I just don’t see Americans allowing us to develop them, particularly against the backdrop of us signalling intentions to deepen ties with countries like China.
I also assume we wouldn’t be able to do this discreetly either given how entrenched I assume American intelligence is within Canada.

How much of this stuff is just messaging from the government towards our allies and others?
I always assume these people aren’t going to freelance an opinion that is going to impact their long term relationship with a government that is always an option for some sinecure or QUANGO job.

The chances of this happening without the US showing up to curbstomp us if we even hinted at it are slim and none.
This is a horrendously stupid idea.

No. Stop.
Look I know Trump is fucking bad but NORAD will endure this and yes NATO will too.
More nukes are an abomination, having a strong conventional military is reasonable enough deterrence.
Also, even for those who advocate for proliferation (insane) it’s not something you just do overnight by slapping some magic rocks in a missile. It takes the guts of a decade.
