Texas is a purple state wearing a scary red mask. It has been for some time. But there’s some kind of psychology as work here that drives down turnout.
Dems just need to win statewide once, show the country and ourselves, and then the true transformation of this country, into something better and less batshit insane, can begin.
Cornyn comes first this year. Then in two years . . . the sane-washed Trump wannabe and the mansion.

The turnout was well less than half a normal midterm for the district. The more energized side won, and if every federal seat had a special election there would be a massive blue wave. But in a midterm when 150,000+ more people vote here, it probably looks a little different.
Dems need to find a way to keep that momentum up.

Gotta be careful how to read this.
The run off happened because Republicans split the first voting session in November.
Rehmet’s close call in November was bolstered by the fact that he was the lone Democrat facing two GOP candidates, who split the Republican vote.
Of course, she may be a terrible candidate too.

Mike Johnson: You see the GOP was always gonna lose that seat. We knew that going in. Trump did as much as he could, but this was a lost cause from the start. This is a democratic district run by Democrats for Democrats.
Tapper: this was a +17 Trump district
Johnson: I will need to look into that bye.

Don’t take too much from this. Sure, it could mean something. It also could be just a random special election.

What time do we expect Trump to announce that this was a stolen election? Before or after lunch?

Conservatives don’t actual care whether or not they win the midterms. Conservatives don’t actually mind when Democrats are in leadership. Democratic Leadership is like having to go to work after a long weekend. Conservatives don’t want to do it but have to in order to put food on the table. Democratic leadership is a necessary far as Conservatives are concerned.
Through a long weekend one drinks too much, eats too much, spends too much, sleeps in, stays up late, and just sort of wilds out. It is unsustainable. That is what Republican leadership has become. A time for rural conservative communities to just let loose and party on the backs of Cities, Universities, and institutions they feel look down on them.
When Democrats win and get back into leadership a sort of status quo returns and things get clean up best they can before the next opportunity Conservatives get to run roughsud over the country.

There’s no way they’re going to let the midterms happen. They know they’re going to get their backs absolutely blown out if they do.

That’s a coalition implosion, is what that is. Large numbers of should-have voted Republicans either sat it out despite marketing, or voted for the Dem.

Good news/bad news. Good: Dems are winning, MAGA is losing. Bad: with a blowout like this the Trump admin will kick the movement to cancel the elections into overdrive.

If this is indicative of the actual state of Texas politics, the districting effort could backfire horribly. Gerrymandering relies of achieving a narrower victory in more districts, but if there’s an unusual turnout, those narrow planned victories can shift more easily.

Holy shit. A 31 point blue swing in just over a year. That’s actually insane.
