I am not much of an Instagram user, but I do get a lot of follows and messages from thirst traps, and when you click on on their profiles, they seem to just have a swarm of South Asian and African men following them. It seems like the backbone of the Instagram economy.

I only use Instagram when someone sends me an Instagram video. I don’t know if I have an account

I think this map should (haven’t verified yet) corelate to the sex ratio for most measure.

Countries with high male ratio will have more male users (like middle east) and high female ratio will have more female users (jst like Northern Europe)

Is this maybe related to how many women have access to to the internet compared to men?

Is the algorithm different for every country or region? Because in Indian instagram, there is so much misogyny, racism, homophobia. Is it because more men(who have such ideology) use it in India?

Love to hear anyone who has a good reason for this sort of thing. For instance, do certain cultures discourage women from communication with non-family members?

Looks like the divide is based on countries with the most conservative/stringent social rules

Here’s my hypothesis : in places where western social media is still a novel exotic thing men, who are more into tech, are more likely to try it, but once instagram is firmly established and common, it appeals to a more female demographic because of its premise of sharing photos of yourself and your life with your IRL friends.
