  1. Excerpt from the article (has no pay wall)

    > Before the coup, Burkina Faso had more than 100 registered political parties, with 15 holding seats in parliament after the 2020 election.

    > But the junta that seized power in 2022 under Captain Ibrahim Traore has clamped down on dissent. Political parties in Burkina Faso have already been barred from holding public events, but they could still operate internally.

    > A bill scrapping party statutes, financing rules and the post of opposition leader will be sent to the transitional council, according to cabinet minutes. All assets of the dissolved parties will be transferred to the state.

Translation: „We have made it illegal to be against us, and all of your money belongs to us now.“

  3. Power consolidated by force rarely ends well, history keeps repeating the same lesson.

  4. Conveniently.

They didn’t risk their lives to put somebody else in power.

Just a cool fact. This guy is massively popular in Burkina Faso. Not just among people there but their citizens abroad are extremely proud of the current government.

This dude is cool, but I wonder how long until the west deems him as a dictator and plot a coup against him.

Uh huh. Isn’t their capital still under fuel blockade from JNIM because JNIM is actually paying and feeding the guys they recruit?

JNIM is a few months away from hat tricking and taking over 3 countries in one go because they fight smart and the juntas act like morons. They use a lot of pirate/mongol style tactics. “If you surrender we live you alone other than some taxes, maybe even let you join up if you want. But if you fight us and you lose you and everyone you know is butchered.”

Every time I say this guy is a sinister character and a dictator in waiting I’m shouted down or downvoted. I’ll never understand his popularity with online African communities. I don’t support neocolonialism either but a military junta is not the answer.

I do not understand why Western leftists like Traore so much. It has been obvious that this was the direction he was going for quite some time

For people who do not follow this situation, this is exactly what we (pro African development people) want. In Africa, democracy stands for Westerner’s choice, and what the West wants for Africa is not good for the average African. We don’t want Elections, we want real economic and societal changes and Ibrahim has been delivering, same as the other leaders AES. The people are INCREDIBLY happy with their leader. He has been crowned the President of AES.

As I said, no more elections, just results.

  14. Surprising no one, the guy who pulled off a military coup is turning into a dictator.

  15. Do you want a potential dozen of years of perceived financial prosperity followed by decades of stagnation, hunger, financial ruin, civil war and revolution? Because this is how you get a potential dozen years of financial prosperity followed by decades of stagnation, hunger, financial ruin, civil war and revolution.

The people of Burkina Faso agree with this. No more elections, just results. Democracy in Africa usually stands for Westerner’s choice, which benefits them and not the African people. They wanted a leader who will approve their lives, and they got it. Ibrahim is one of the greatest leaders in the world right now.

  17. It is not wise to have so many affiliates with the west lurking to fund and put a proxy in place. The people aren’t the ones trying to kill him, it’s France.

You must consolidate and let the people experience self driven prosperity supported by an indigenous driven infrastructure. In doubt? Look to Sudan, Ethiopia, Lybia, Syria, Iraq etc.

They must keep the so called west out until infrastructure and contracted services are complete. The danger is only when the “junta” loves the power more than the people.

He has not shown that tendency yet. But I’m Black American and am slightly bitter that I can’t go 🖤

  18. Would you look at that, all the people who said he is a dictator were correct.
