Didn’t most sensible people who value privacy switch to signal, yet?
I mean, the only known leaks for that messenger are basically the biggest drunk imbeciles and traitors inviting journalists to their top secret pentagon chats…
Meta’s response is unusually defensive. If the encryption is solid, let discovery prove it. The fact that they’re already talking sanctions before seeing evidence suggests they’re worried about what might come out in court
I hope when this court case is thrown out it gets the same coverage as this.
Shocking………. /aboringdystopia
(BTW did you really expect they couldn’t and wouldn’t? Lol it’s meta)
It’s always crazy to me how big WhatsApp is outside the US. For me WhatsApp is just a huge scammer indicator.
I for one am shook. SHOOK. Meta? Behave in a way that violates your privacy in the name of data collection? The foundations of my world crumble, my preconceived notions wither, like nubile blades of grass endlessly baked in the blazing sun. The cold sea of reality wells up and drowns me in its frigid embrace.
But also, not fucking shit.
What’s the evidence that Whatsapp isn’t end to end encrypted or that Meta can read messages?
Whatsapp uses Signal protocol.
Where’s that surprised Pikachu face when you need it?
You can’t read mine because I don’t have any.
That’s not impressive, I can read them too
I hope meta enjoys reading my boring messages to my mum
But also – in this article or in any of the links – where’s the evidence of this?
*They allege that Meta and WhatsApp “store, analyze, and can access virtually all of WhatsApp users’ purportedly ‘private’ communications” — and accuse the companies and their leaders of defrauding WhatsApp’s billions of users worldwide.*
*A spokesperson for Meta, which acquired WhatsApp in 2014, called the lawsuit “frivolous” and said that the company “will pursue sanctions against plaintiffs’ counsel.”*
So it’s a He Said, She Said at this point until either side provides proof. Stupid clickbait article.
A reminder that when Facebook wanted to buy WhatsApp, the EU specifically asked them if they would link the accounts internally and they said no. As soon as FB bought them, we (I’m in Germany) started getting messages in FB asking us for our phone number so that they could unlock our account if we forgot our password. Turns out, they wanted it so they could link the accounts, which was revealed years later. They paid the fine, no one was punished, and they moved on. The cost of lying is simply too small.
And it occurs to me, WhatsApp says that everything is encrypted end-to-end. It doesn’t say that they don’t know how to decrypt the messages.
Lmao at everyone who thought chats on a Meta app were private. No matter how many times it’s proven to me. I’m always astounded at how many stupid people are actually out there.
If you did this, admit your mistake or admit, you don’t have a problem with the government spying on you
So we just let users make up headlines now?
I always found it weird how FB and IG recommends me people who I’ve had as WhatsApp contacts but don’t have their numbers on this new phone nor do any of them have my current number.
Why is anyone surprised by this? Anyone who has been in technology should understand that no matter what your privacy is always at risk.
Well i mean, whatsapp is owned by meta…
Is anyone surprised that Facebook is scum?
>Meta can read your WhatsApp chats!!!
No, they cannot.
Neither the article nor the lawsuit itself provided any evidence about *how* they are doing; just a wild claim. I’m extremely curious how Meta would be achieving this, but as of now, the OP’s text is fearmongering.
There are no indications Meta can read contents of Whatsapp messages.
Usual disclaimer: I don’t support, like or enjoy what Meta has been doing as a business in terms of privacy and marketing and manipulation and wish they would go out of business. But I can still stay objective about how they use end-to-end encryption.
Fair to assume that ‚they‘ can read anything and everything you post and send through the system.
No shit its own by Facebook!
No! They fucking can’t! I never had whatsapp!
I honestly just assumed that the moment I started using WhatsApp 😅
Article headline: Lawsuit Claims Meta Can See WhatsApp Chats in Breach of Privacy
Post on r/technology: Meta can read your WhatsApp chats!!!
A lawsuit can say just about anything. It’s a statement of claim. The plaintiffs don’t have to provide any evidence in a statement of claim, they can just make claims.
That said, Quinn Emanuel and Keller Postman are legit law firms, and if they’re trying to certify a class action they must be reasonably confident they can get something out of it. Maybe they’re hoping Meta will settle to avoid discovery, or maybe their whistleblowers have some damning evidence. I just don’t think the existence of this lawsuit can be taken as evidence that Meta can read your WhatsApp messages.
Message itself may be encrypted but there is nothing stopping meta from capturing keyboard output or sending the unencrpted message back to meta. The metadata about who you are talking to is probably more important to law enforcement and other parties.
What’s next? Passively listening to ambient conversation and mapping voices to people so you can sell targeted advertising? /s
Water is wet
No sh*t sherlock
Curious about who these whistleblowers are
