The EU already learned the hard way and continues to learn from the Bosnian War when on one side Bosnia invited Mujahadeen and other Islamist fighting groups to help defend them. These people took on Bosnian identities, potentially dead Bosnians, using the fog of war to obscure their identities and make it difficult for their fake identities to be proven. They also brought in fighters from Chechnya and other places. These people then gained access to western Europe with refugee waves, resettlement, and so on.
