For the uninitiated, what was Digg and why did it go away only to come back?
The ambitious reboot, announced today, aims to create a community-first platform that uses AI to empower users and improve content moderation. Additional funding comes from True Ventures, which Rose recently joined as partner, and Ohanian’s venture firm Seven Seven Six.
So, private equity trying to reboot a defunct brand, by shoehorning „AI“ into it.

The entire article is a very generic overview of how most forums work. It doesn’t have anything useful like how digg, which has a much smaller userbase, would be a compelling alternative to reddit. Upvote counts for large sections (ex. „pics“) seem to be in the single digits.
Mid-2000s Digg was amazing. I had it as my legit homepage for years until they ruined it.
It’s full of MAGA trolls and other shitheads. I deleted my account after a couple of months in the closed beta
There won’t be another big social news agregator site until the bot problem is solved in a way that pleases advertisers.
It has an AI „podcast“. No thanks.
Right, so the very first question:
Who owns it?
With Meta,Twitter, and now US TikTok being surveillance mouthpieces for the Regime we really don’t need another one of those.
Nah. Best I can do is decentralized internet.
Reddit won by being “less corporate” than Digg back then.
Looks like you can’t edit your comments.
DIGG could potentially end up being invaded by obnoxious teenage sprogs.
Countries, like Australia, that have banned kiddies from social media have list of services they are not permitted on, DIGG is not on their list yet.
It’s more like „the back door of the internet“ now, but I have a hard time imagining digg overtaking it. What’s next, myspace reviving to challange facebook?
I hope Mr Baby Man is back
Digg used to be the best before they changed their UI and posting back in the day.
Anyone used to watch Diggnation? I went to a live show in Brooklyn once lol
From the looks of it you need to install an app to use an account and get a feed. No thanks.
Doesn’t support video uploads.
Dead on arrival.
The moment I heard of the digg reboot I knew it was gonna go bad.
Didn’t expect AI forum bad but expected bad.
I’m using it but there seems to be a lot of dead communities
So is the v4 history already? I was just getting used to reddit
I wanna go back to when we were using vbulletin boards.
lol it’s also old money Silicon Valley shit… nothing gonna get much better from that.
You need actual humble college kids to revamp the internet.
As a reminder, Kevin Rose is a massive crypto grifter that was heavily pushing NFTs until he pivoted to this “AI” hype train.
Reddit absolutely has its problems, but nothing about this “new” Digg solves them. Hard pass.
Kevin Rose is a trash man and Alex isn’t far behind. It’s gonna be a no from me, dawg.
I still remember when Kevin Rose would slyly advertise dog on attack of the show.
As a veteran of the Digg exodus, they can go to hell.
Get Slashdot on the horn, the band is back baby!! Yasss
Fuck em. Kevin Rose et al had their chance and sold-out. Long live Reddit!
Right now, userbase is small, it’s the main disadvantage re: Reddit.
Usability is high. Compared to Mastodon, it’s a big plus. For this reason, I can’t see Mastodon growing into something more than a fun project.
Digg is just beginning, after a long beta phase. I wasn’t here, on Reddit at the beginning, so I have no idea if there were millions of users worldwide right on the first year. Hard to imagine it was the case. Yes, I know Digg isn’t „new“, it’s a comeback.
Still, lots of people likely never new it existed and if you use Google to search for something, Reddit comes on top. Which search engine is the most used (for reasons…) ? Yeah.
It’s going to take some years before there’s a large user base. Cyberpunk forum is empty rn, for example.
Linux has been around for decades, every year is the year of Linux on the desktop and only now has it grown above 3% market share, closing in on 5%, depending on which source. Microsoft ain’t really scared about it’s Windows advertising revenues 🙂
One day, maybe we’ll all be on Digg, remembering the fond days we had on Reddit 😂
If I go full circle on this and end up back on Digg I will eat my hat.
I’d rather just go back to forums at this point.
Digg died for a good reason.
I’ve used it since it reopened a few weeks ago, and I already stopped visiting it. It’s exactly like Reddit but with less people in it.
Why even bother with a carbon copy of something that already exists?
Do they handle moderation differently than Reddit?
Just downloaded it,
Hopefully it is better than this shit when it comes to Mods and Admin powers. Those assholes alone have contributed to reddits demise
