Sadly there is a whole segment of right-leaning that feel that chumming up with who they perceive as powerful and cruel, will allow them to make deals and bring stability.
Likewise, Trump palling around in North Korea is great in their eyes. Even if nothing is accomplished other than the feeling of belonging to an in group.
Meanwhile it’s fine to trample on your allies like Denmark because “they only have 2 dogsleds” to defend their nation and are weak. Therefore they should submit and be taken advantage of.
It’s all optics and performative. To them this is what strength looks like. Others see the moronic short sightedness of such a worldview.
I’m convinced he truly sees Putin as some kind of surrogate father figure. And of course the more Putin keeps him at arms length while dropping morsels of approval, the more he fits the model of the distant father that Trump expects, and the more he becomes attached.
