  1. Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s chief executive officer turned down a Trump cabinet secretary’s attempt to lure the manufacturer’s headquarters to the US from Germany, where its roots date back to the invention of the automobile.
In an interview with The Pioneer, a German media outlet, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius said US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick made the overture roughly a year ago, dangling tax relief and other incentives. Although Källenius declined, Mercedes later announced plans to shift production of a sport utility vehicle from Germany to its existing plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Somehow “Alabama engineering” doesn’t have the same allure as “German engineering”

  3. I think Europe needs to watch out hiring American CEOs in the future. Especially with the US actively trying to lure European companies over.

We don’t want American plants that sell European assets to the US like what happened with Nokia.

I’m certain this is only the start. Other proposals are sure to follow.

  5. We tried that in the 90s when Daimler merged with Chrysler. It has been widely regarded as a terrible move.

The cultures are just too different.

If Mercedes became a US company in the current political climate, they would lose a lot of customers especially in the public sector.

  6. So the US wants Mercedes to become an American-based company…

I wonder if they also want a revamp of the Mercedes 770 for governmental use

  7. The brand is already pretty damaged in my world. Their electric cars are plastic boxes, the quality is gone.

This is tantamount to trying to get companies to set up shop in Yugoslavia right before 1991.
