>Ottawa and Seoul have signed a memorandum of understanding intended to bring South Korean auto manufacturing and investment to Canada, according to a document reviewed by The Globe and Mail.
>The MOU stems from the Asian country’s campaign to win a multibillion-dollar contract to build up to 12 submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy.
>Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and her counterpart, Kim Jung-kwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Resources, signed the MOU this week as a government delegation from South Korea visits Ottawa to talk about the submarine bid. The ceremony took place Tuesday, a government official said.
>The Globe and Mail is not naming the official because they were not authorized to speak on the matter.
>The MOU on Korea-Canada Industrial Collaboration on Future Mobility and the Establishment of the Korea-Canada Industrial Cooperation Committee is non-binding but pledges both sides to working together to promote the manufacturing of autos, electric vehicles, battery manufacturing and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
>The agreement says Ottawa and Seoul will work on “advancing a Korean automotive industrial footprint in Canada” as well as “electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing opportunities.”
>It also says the two countries will co-operate on “growing Korea’s battery manufacturing presence in Canada” as well as the battery supply chain including “manufacturing, critical mineral extraction and refinement, research, development and extraction.”
>The MOU says this accord recognizes the “complementarity of the two economies and their significant potential for cooperation in the industrial sector.”
>It also talks of co-operation on hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles and a stable hydrogen production and supply chain.

The unspoken thing about moving our manufacturing partners to be asian countries instead of american is we can finally properly legislate headlight glare. Headlights brighter than the sun beaming into your car cabin is because of our car regulations being handcuffed to america and they dont give a fuck about headlight safety issues. Also will give us a chance to detransition from this truck/suv dominated sector.

Its sad Canada can only assemble other nations cars, and we’re unable to manufacture our own.
And Canada will not send thugs to arrest South Korean workers who come to Canada to set everything up.

This also probably means we are getting the KSS-III submarines from South Korea. A few weeks ago, Canada had said that due to the competition being so close between SK and the Germany/Norway bid, they wanted both countries to bring more auto-industrial benefits to Canada as a sort of tiebreaker. Show which country is more serious about partnership, and to obviously reap the extra benefits of getting more jobs from the extra manufacturing. Volkswagen exists in Canada already, but only a single EV battery plant, iirc, and I have yet to hear a peep out of them regarding that. The Submarine company TKMS did another MOU since then but nothing out of Volkswagen or the German government since that was made.
Add a clause that more kdramas need to be filmed here too.
