**From Reuters:**
The United States has told Ukraine that it must sign on to a peace deal with Russia in order to get U.S. security guarantees, a source familiar with internal discussions told Reuters on Tuesday.
U.S. security guarantees are considered by Ukraine as the linchpin for any settlement ending Russia’s four-year-old invasion of Ukraine. The United States brokered talks in Abu Dhabi between envoys for Ukraine and Russia last weekend that U.S. officials said made progress toward an agreement.

The US Can’t be trusted as long as there is a Republican in Office
so in other words the US is not willing to declare war on Russia right now? breaking news i guess?
But Ukraine already has done so…nukes were given up in exchange for precisely security guarantees…or is it the 1994 treaty just a joke…?
Even if Ukraine signs the peace deal, Russia never will. Putin knows that as soon as any kind of peace deal is signed, international peacekeepers move onto Ukrainian soil and will act as a tripwire force. That will be the end of Putin’s ambitions.
What use is an American security guarantee? Or Russian one for that matter? It’ll be broken at the earliest convenience.
I don’t see how this is news. The US has never been open to providing security guarantees which could bring it into conflict with Russia in Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine. They have always been discussed as forward looking, to prevent future Russian aggression once peace is agreed. This has been true under Biden and Trump and is one of the few concrete things we know about the „security guarantees“ being considered.
What we still don’t know, of course, is what those guarantees would actually entail. Or whether it would bind the US to do anything in the event of another Russian invasion, besides express support in words and send token supplies (what a minimum article 5 response would look like, for example). This is assuming Ukraine even thinks they could trust America’s word anymore, should they get more explicit guarantees.
So, despite the author’s source denying that the Trump administration is pressuring Ukraine to accept a *specific* peace deal with big territorial concessions, it appears like that’s what’s happening here. Just renewed attempts by the administration to pressure Ukraine into submission. Which, while not a policy change, Is the actual story here, I think.
