    1. I’m delighted to hear that the government is ignoring that ridiculous legal review.

I have no idea why the opposition parties are wasting political capital on this. I’ve never met anyone who understands what the triple lock is who supports it. The comments in this thread opposing ending the triple lock perfectly demonstrate this. It makes 0 sense that these parties want the US, Russia, China, France and the UK to have a veto over over our troop deployments. Sinn Féin in particular wanting the UK to have a say in our troop deployments is especially baffling.

The Green party oppose it even though their own foreign policy panel (made up of former generals and directors at Comreg) recommended to back the government on this. Ignoring its own experts on this led to the chair of this group to resign, and rightly so.

      >But Opposition parties and pro-neutrality campaigners argue the abolition of the triple lock will lead to erosion of the Republic’s long-standing policy of military neutrality.

This makes no sense. How is it more neutral to let foreign powers with imperialist pasts (and presents) dictate our defence policy?

The only way the UN remains fit for purpose into the future is if the security council is abolished

I’m curious if Catherine Connolly will say something about this because if this is passed then she’ll have to sign it into law.

    4. Fuck the government putting future children into wars for America corporations. Neutrality should be the aim of all nations but money and especially US money is crack to politicians.

    5. A very sensible decision.

The very idea of the triple lock is just ridiculous, and totally redundant in today’s multipolar world. The only people who should ever have a say in when and where Irish troops are deployed are we ourselves.

Queue Sinn Fein arguing in support of Britain’s veto on Irish troop deployments…

Yes they did that and yes it’s just as silly as it sounds.

Not only did they do that but PBP and Soc Dems did the same.

Im pretty sure Soc Dems lost a lot of support amongst their base because they assumed their voters didn’t understand how the triple lock and the UN bodies actually work in practice.

„Oh well we better do what the bigger leftist party is doing and toe the line on this triple lock thing…“(Soc dem polling team probably).

I should note i lean centre left and am frustrated with pretty much every party flip flopping with hypocrisy evrry two minutes. I could write an entire encyclopedia on the shortcomings of FF and FG but its no wonder the alternative parties don’t get the votes when they assume their voters are too stupid/emotional to read into their conflations and half truths.

They have to be so much better than FF and FG. I’m not saying that it is fair but they’re competing with legacy parties in a country where politics is largely based on historical family ties.

      In my opinion.

    7. This pretty much proves the warmongering to be true, the government want to be able to send our forces to war with no oversight and even according to the article they want to be able to sent 50 abroad with even a dail vote.

You have to ask WHY why would we want this what ambitions have the government got in mind that they so badly want missions abroad whenever they’re feeling like it.

In this current world of privacy and rights crackdowns more military actions is the last thing we’ll want as citizens. Especially with out close ties to America, what happens if king trump demand we go on a few missions for him or he’ll hit us hard in the economy. Seeing as even with all the murders by ice the st Patricks day visit is going ahead anyway. This will put the Irish military in the hands the US or the highest bidder mark my words.

It looks like the Government (led by an increasingly autocratic Micheál Martin) are refusing to entertain any level of additional oversight for deployment of Irish troops abroad.

The Oireachtas Defense Committee proposed that we should at least have a formal legal review, but it looks like this has been dismissed out of hand by the Government –

„One source said this would be ‚getting rid of one triple lock and replacing it with another‘.“

So taking the argument against the current triple-lock in good faith (that the UN Security Council vetos mean no troops will be ever deployed again), what reason could the current Government have for not wanting more oversight by our elected officials for something as serious as foreign troop deployment?

This shows that this whole thing has nothing to do with what’s best for the Irish people, the country or our democracy but is a cynical way for the Government to gain more control because they believe they know better than the rest of us.

EDIT: The war hawks and COD fetishisers here can downvote all they want but they can’t give a single good reason why the Dáil shouldn’t have more oversight for overseas troop deployment.

    9. I’m pretty sure I can understand the arguments in favour of abolishing the triple lock, but could someone explain the benefits of retaining the triple lock? Even playing devil’s advocate, if it’s not your position?

    10. Gearing up for conflict. Let’s introduce conscription, get you lads match fit. All those years playing computer games in your mam’s gaff will really stand too you.
Get yez all ready for a deployment.

    11. Why should we listen to the UN on what we should do? They don’t actually do anything. Like look at what’s happening in the world and all they have is speeches and maybe sanctions that barely hinder anything. The world is changing quicker than they can act.

We need to look after ourselves and those who and what we care about without some slow, seemingly ineffective, overly bureaucratic organisation telling us what is for the greater good

I don’t get how people bought into this nonsense hook, line and sinker. Abolishing the triple lock is a disastrous move, the government has continually lied about why it’s ’necessary‘. They’ve been pushing this for months, and nobody in the media has asked why – those should be two immediate red flags.

The Triple Lock requires that the UN Security Council or the UN General Assembly back a mission. There’s no veto in the UNGA. Russia, China, or the US cannot veto a resolution there. Anytime Ireland wants to undertake a peacekeeping mission, it just has to propose it in the UNGA. The fearmongering around vetoes is nonsense.

This whole thing is simply because they want to dismantle neutrality so they can send Irish troops to fight in forever wars at the US/EU’s behest. We know this government is in the pocket of the US & Israel from past instances of interference with the occupied territories bill, why would you ever listen to them?

    13. Why should we listen to the UN on what we should do? They don’t actually do anything. Like look at what’s happening in the world and all they have is speeches and maybe sanctions that barely hinder anything. The world is changing quicker than they can act.

    14. Troops can be deployed for more than just peacekeeping missions. They can be deployed for humanitarian missions, peace enforcement missions, training missions, and so on.

My point is that it shouldn’t be anyone but Ireland itself that decides the circumstances of an Irish troop deployment overseas.

Ukraine is just an example of a conflict where it might well be in our best interest to contribute troops in circumstances where Russia has already stated they won’t accept any western peacekeepers on Ukrainian territory. Russia is a bad-faith and biased actor here so ultimately we should be in a position where we can tell Russia to go fuck themselves and send troops, if we decided to do so. The government and DF will no doubt consider the merits of doing so but again, arbitrarily restricting our ability to deploy troops because of something like a triple lock is just plain fucking stupid in this day and age. Even the US is looking more and more like an unfriendly nation and they also have a seat on the UNSC, so potentially there are even more blocks than before. They were already the driving force behind the UNAFIL mission not being extended which has directly impacted on the DF, so why continue like this?

    15. hatrickpatrick on

I’d support this only if we replaced it with constitutional neutrality. Handing the Cabinet a blank cheque on this (which it is, since we have one of the weakest parliaments in the world) is disastrous.

    16. People would really want to look into and research what the triple lock is, in short it is what makes us neutral. Without the triple lock we are f**ked, we’re going be joining NATO now before you no it. Anyone celebrating this are literally turkeys voting for Christmas

    17. There is clearly something in the mix regarding Ukraine and a peace settlement…they have been ramping up the urgency of this over the past year
