Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK wouldn’t have to choose between the US and China, as he heralded “significant opportunities” for British businesses ahead of his trip to Beijing this week.
In an interview with Bloomberg on Monday, Starmer dismissed questions about whether he was seeking stronger ties with China at the expense of the UK’s relationship with its closest allies. Starmer’s trip to China — the first by a British prime minister in eight years — comes on the heels of a similar delegation by Canadian counterpart Mark Carney that drew fresh tariff threats from US President Donald Trump. Won’t be forced to choose either, but we in Britain will manage to pull the short end of the stick somehow or other. If only there was a great big trade bloc on our continent we could join, with 27 other nations and 10 potential future members, so that we could be stronger positioned for bigger and better trade deals on the international stage
I’m not so sure about it… Few days after Canada reached an agreement with China, Trump threatened with 100% tariffs. Why would the UK’s case be any different?
Maybe since a reentry in the EU isn’t possible soon the Brits will revisit the CANZUK concept?
