This is the use we will see from now on with AI, An increase in malicious activities and misuse for personal gain, In different aspects of society In different aspects of society

    2. Brock_Danger on

Bots were already doing this for over a decade, this is definitely already happening

I’m sure there were millions to grok powered “commenters” this week spreading lies about the murder of Alex Pretti

    3. It’s not exactly being done quietly. It’s right out in the open, completely obvious.

I fear we’re walking into a situation where social media will get so bad it will trigger crackdowns on free speech, elections, etc. It already happened in Romania, it’s going to happen in many other countries. A very damned if you do damned if you don’t situation

    5. Russian bot farms already did this in America, twice. I guess AI coming for their jobs is the actual story here.

Go ahead and read any comment section on news articles and you will see this has already been done by other state actors.

It’s already happening on closed information spaces where the general public has to jump through hoops to contribute. An easy one here on reddit to point out is r conservative. The place is over ran with “ai swarms” that push Trump agenda, and none of the more traditional conservative voices get heard, and seem much in the minority.

It happens in open spaces as well, such as r politics, but with ability of millions of real people to contribute it’s much more difficult to make it appear as a false majority.

    8. „Could“, as if it isn’t already occurring and didn’t impact 2024…

Just wait until all software is replaced with a portal to agentic ai, you’ll never see or hear from another real human online ever again!

      I give it 2 years.

    10. Cambridge analitica already did that in the Philippines. Then improved on it and did it in the US. That’s how trump got elected.

The funny thing is, that when we stop using any social media, this whole strategy will fall apart (and bankrupt the social media’s). Unfortunately I’m typing this on social media……..

Nyet is the Fake News! I not believe Fake News media, here at blue-collar heartland factory all comrade workers tell me, „Yuri, voice of people being ignored, best get news from the twitter facebook!“

    12. This has already been happening on Reddit.

Every country and large corporation uses bots to astroturf every form on the internet , ai just automated it

It’s analogous to the shift from photoshopped images to ai generated ones, fakery is just easier now but by no means new

This is already happening. Brexit was won with manipulation by fake sm accounts.

The only way to stop it, without an outright ban on American sm/advertising platforms, is to remove anonymity and/or charge a fee to post…

    14. Too late. In America, the 1% already have control of all three branches of government and both major political parties.

Polls and public opinion haven’t mattered here for a very long time, folks.

This just automates the rooms full of Russians and Chinese and Nigerians posting all over social media.

So … bot farms? Yeah this isn’t exactly anything new. It’s at least a decade old, in fact. Which, when I think about it, really could be said about pretty much everything „AI“ does. Which is why it’s suffering such slow adoption.

    17. sevenredpandas on

What do you mean could? Just look at any comment section after the regime kills someone.

    18. Are we really just going to pretend that the elephant isn’t already in the room. And that foreign bot networks and handmade custom propaganda served on a silver platter by Facebook and Cambridge Analytica created with the explicit consent of Mark Zuckerberg. Already didn’t play a role in electing the most belligerent unprofessional petulant child for a president? Because I for one would like all of these white collar assholes dragged into a congressional hearing when all is said and done. Even if all we get out of it is a public record of their treachery.

Nostradamus said we would all be numbers eventually. He’s right, because unless we have some system to identify people as being unique (no anonymous bots) and real this is going to happen.

      BUT

There are ways to do this and NOT expose the individual.

Until we start treating privacy and identity seriously, this is going to be the outcome.

    20. stuffitystuff on

If „public concensus“ mean „the sum of what social media accounts are stating“ then we’ve already lost.

    21. fascinatedobserver on

We already have bots and underpaid armies of and/or actual slave humans doing that.
People act like AI is a game changer in that regard. Not at all.
