Markus Söder in a vegan restaurant – how accurate is this?

  1. It‘s really just a Söder thing after he became a food blogger. Like, really. He has an instagram.

In some bubbles, especially on the right side of the political spectrum, veganism is no longer just a personal choice but a political issue and abused for polarization. Some political decisions do not really help, like the ruling that something plant based can no longer be called ’sausage‘. However, in real life veganism is quite accepted.

  3. Markus Söder will do anything to gain attention. He’s entitled to his views on veganism, but the provacative statements he makes about it are designed to get his face in the papers.

    > How do you think veganism is perceived in German politics and society right now?

There’s a variety of opinions ranging from Söder’s „Tofu bad, roast pork good“ to „Butter is murder,“ but I think most people don’t care very much. There is a large section of society that considers veganism eccentric, unhealthy, and probably a fad, but it’s a free country: so long as they can still get their cows‘ milk, you can have almond milk if that’s what you want.

Politicians might have a similar range of views (obviously, they’re humans too, even if sometimes it’s difficult to believe), but in a capitalist economy it’s very simple: if a company can make money selling veggie-burgers, let them sell veggie-burgers, so what? The political establishment as a whole is pretty agnostic about the whole thing.
