There’s no country called „Republic of Ireland“. It’s just called Ireland.

Great Britain usually means the single island not the group of islands or a synonym of the United Kingdom. It technically only means the island and the synonym is a colloquialism and not the correct term.

Well no because Great Britain is a geographic not a political term. Great Britain is the biggest of the islands.

The best is when Irish people get mad at Americans calling them British

Technically Great Britain is the main island (with Anglesey island int he northwestern edge of wales not part of it)

  6. What’s up with these Anglos and title rage bait?

We’ve been over this ad nauseam. British and Irish Isles or Atlantic archipelago.

Otherwise we do the same petty shit in reverse.

TIL that Ireland had enough brain cells to stay in the EU. Good job Ireland.

I’d like you to find someone from Eire who accepts they’re part of the British Isles

  9. So which area is just Britain? Is it short for Great Britain, or does Britain=England?

  10. Great britain is the biggest island. The whole archipelago being called the British isles.

  11. UK (and Ireland) is fine, dgaf about all names UK people want to give their provinces really, it’s just regions like other countries have. No disrespect but do you know all states in Germany, provinces of France and Sweden, …former states of Yugoslavia etc?

Now we need names for England and Wales but not Scotland, Scotland and Wales but not England, …

Ireland doesnt like being grouped in with the term British isles. Its like getting out of an abusive relationship but you arent allowed to change your surname.

  14. This would look more funny if Orkney joined Norway, as they threaten to do all the time

Do you think there will ever be a week some variation of this map isn’t posted?

For the billionth time, Ireland is not part of the terminology the British Isles.

The Irish are told to suck it up as it’s meant to be a purely geographical term with no political significance. That’s absolute nonsense. The Channel Islands off the coast of France are often included yet the Chausey Islands who are right beside them are never said to be in the British Isles.

It’s an outdated colonial term. In 99.999% of cases the UK and Ireland, or Britain and Ireland, or Great Britain and Ireland suffices.

One last thing, another error in the map, the name of the country is simply Ireland, not the Republic of Ireland.

  17. Are you trying to convince Unionists that they’re Irish and not British.

  18. Well, that’s wrong. Great Britain is the name of the largest island and doesn’t include any other island.

  19. AceOfSpades532 on

Great Britain is the island, it doesn’t include Man and Wight and all the others.

  20. Why are the Orkney and Shetland islands considered part of Great Britain but the Isle of Man isn’t?
