McPherson should be the winner by default. Insiders are likely staying away from Lewis’s campaign because they know him.

  2. I can’t wait for another 2 months of the media pretending this race is competitive, when anybody with eyes or ears knows that Lewis is going to win on the first ballot. The insiders know that McPherson is the best path forward for the party, but that won’t stop Lewis’s organizational skills wining him the race.

We’ll see how it all shakes out. It sounds like Lewis is leading in sign ups, but existing membership is heavily weighted towards B.C. and the Prairies.

A lot will come down who people have as their second preferences, and whether a lot of folks who see themselves as primarily Provincial New Democrats turn in their ballots. And just a good dose of strategic voting. Do I put McPherson 1) and Lewis 2), which would be my honest preference, or do I game the ballot, recognizing that the best ballot I can cast if I want Heather as leader puts Avi in 4th?

It’s worth saying that the NDP has a long tradition of failed insurgent leadership candidates, going all the way back to the Waffles, through Svend Robinson, to Jagmeet crushing Ashton and Angus on the first ballot in 2017.
