Honestly, it is about time most do this. These things are scooters at this point.
Ive seen these things keep pace with cars that are easily doing like 35 mph with no effort from the Rider. The fact they can legally be ridden with no license or insurance is ridiculous

I’m waiting on the resale of these from parents of teenagers who have been driving these recklessly and don’t want to go through the hassle of getting license and insurance.

More to the point… the NJ Senate President, a car accident personal injury attorney, cracks down on e-bikes because he can’t make money off of uninsured e-bike accidents
These things have gotten wild with all the teens in my area going 30+ doing wheelies and tearing up bike trails.
When these things are popping wheelies from a standstill without the rider even touching the pedals it’s pretty wild
This article raises some questions.
1 Why aren’t E-Scooters included?
2 Why is there no discrimination between the at least 3 types of E-Bike?

It seems like the law is working in very broad strokes, when some ebikes are good assistive tools (especially for the disabled) that aren’t more dangerous than a normal bike, while others are functionally electric motorcycles.

Whereas my home state (Florida) will likely come out with a decree that it’s your God given right to have a child ride the fastest e-bike possible, without any sort of license, helmet, etc…because “freedom” 🙄
NJ has had motorized bicycle laws for a long time. Back in the 80’s, when I was 15, I had to get a license (written and driving test), insurance, registration, required motorcycle rated helmet, speeds were supposed to be limited to 25mph, you could not ride doubles, and you could not ride on any divided highway or freeway.
Electrics were initially exempted because they would only do like 5mph or they would just give some assist but wouldn’t go faster than you could pedal. Now they are ripping around at easily 30-35 mph, so seems like it is time to treat them the same vehicle with a gas engine.
My husband is a trauma surgeon, accidents related to these things, e-scooters, and golf carts being used on roads are probably the most common level 1s he gets. They absolutely should be regulated like this imo.
Honestly this law is a joke. How about we actually address the problem that ebikes are not a problem here. E-motos are. If you have to pedal, its an e- bike and these go the same speed as a regular bike. Emotos you just hold a throttle and you fly.
they outlawed these for kids under 18 in my city and it really hasn’t made much of a difference that I can tell. I still see kids flying around on these things on the roads, usually without a helmet. The other day I saw some kid flying around in traffic on one at night without any lights on it, no helmet. Just profoundly stupid behavior.

Good. These things tear around streets and sidewalks and are silent. Kids have no business on them.
In my city , it’s always the up to no good teens zipping around in these. It’s never just a commuter.
I’m all for crackdown/enforcement. Violation = immediate impound

The idea that you could “class” e-bikes based on visually indistinguishable characteristics was foolish to begin with. Imagine if we exempted “classes” of cars from licensing and registration if you pinky swore that it could only go 28mph.
I’m sorry for the folks that want to switch out the car or just being sedentary for an e-bike, but the jagoffs selling and riding illegal emotos ruined it for everybody.

Great innovation, and a decent mode of transportation.
But sadly, it’s been hijacked by a few inconsiderate individuals, who zip around at 30+ mph, and don’t obey the rules of the road at all.
It’s quite something when you’re doing 30 mph on a motorcycle, and one of these zips by you on the right in a bike lane.
And the rider has on no gear, helmet etc. I’ve even witnessed two kids on one with no gear, just wanting to be meat crayons.
That said, kudos to those mono wheel riders. Those riders are considerate, obey traffic laws, and even gear up! I’m like shoot, that guys wearing a full face helmet right on lol

My dogs and I have had some close calls on paved trails near my house with youngins whizzing by at 30mph. And I’m sure youngins are getting hurt on the roads. Idk what the answer is but we need to take them seriously

OMG NYC needs this. They fly on sidewalks, or in spots where no vehicle should be, go the wrong way on busy streets, so much injury potential.
License, registration, and insurance for an e-bike. lol. Government needs their nickle and dime I guess.

This might be some necessary idea, I dunno, but I don’t like it and it definitely would have influenced my buying decision if this law existed in my state. I love my ebike and one of the reasons I like it so much is because it’s a reasonably capable mobility vehicle that I don’t need special permission from someone to use or pay extra money for owning. I use it largely as a bike with pedal assist, I „modified“ (used the official app) to go from 20mph limit to 28mph limit, but TBH, I rarely hit that and the only time I genuinely hit 28mph is on downhills where inertia is doing the work, not the motor. I’m a bigger guy so getting that little motor to hit 28.5mph consistently isn’t really possible.
I drive my daughter to school on mine, well I used to (now have 2 kids and it’s not appropriate for the baby until he’s of age), but man it was great fo cruise past traffic and get her to school in 90 seconds, instead of 18mins sitting in bumper to bumper traffic trying to get into the school drop off zone.
A lot of the arguments I see from non e-bike riders are just bad faith. „I see kids going 50mph all the time!“ No you don’t, maybe you saw a youtube video once and you’ve put yourself in the video. And if you do, they’re not riding what we’d usually call e-bikes, they’re on an electric motorcycle which is different. „they’re so dangerous to pedestrians!“ Sure, there is a responsible way to ride any bike, some young kids ignore it, some adults ignore it, msot people ride them responsibly.
This is how it should be. I’ve seen so many kids get absolutely maimed on or by these things.
E-bikes are not e-mopeds, which constitute the majority of injuries and collisions on the roads.
To require a class 1 ebike to have the same restrictions as a motorcycle despite analog bikes without motors capable of going FASTER than them shows you how unbelievable short sighted and stupid this law is. All this does is make the lives of people who choose not to drive even more burdensome and does little to make anyone safer.
Ebikes are not a threat. Car centric cities that make navigating them without cars is, and we already have existing laws to crack down on illegal mopeds pretending to be bicycles. Address the actual problem here, don’t punish people just trying to go to work.

Good. I have come far too close to hitting one of these things, several times, ridden by someone who isn’t old enough to understand how traffic works. I hope NYS does the same.
