The deal that persuaded President Donald Trump to defuse an escalating crisis over Greenland paves the way for NATO to beef up security in the Arctic region and fend off any threat from Russia or China.

The “framework” cited by Trump after his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, late Wednesday entails the stationing of US missiles, mining rights aimed at keeping Chinese interests out and a bolstered NATO presence, according to a European official briefed on the talks.

The pact locked in soon after Trump’s arrival Wednesday at the Swiss resort also hinges on the US leader standing by his promise not to impose tariffs against European nations off the table, the official said on condition of anonymity as talks remain behind closed doors.

  2. This is all stuff he could have simply asked for…I guess we have to wait about details regarding mining rights but an increased NATO presence in the arctic and northern Atlantic is planned anyway, and Denmark has never refused American requests for whatever military presence they want in Greenland.

The actual sticking point – converting US bases to US sovereign territory – seems to have quietly disappeared now.

    > Trump told Fox Business that the terms of the deal are being negotiated, “but, essentially, it’s total access.”

    > “There’s no end, there’s no time limit,” Trump said. “We’re getting everything we want at no cost.”

    > Asked if the US would ultimately acquire Greenland, he said: “It’s possible. But in the meantime, we’re getting everything we wanted, total security.”

Ngl, while de-escalation is good and all i wonder if someone can ask for accountability from the next president for all this mess. The more one yields now, the more they sold their future to america. Unless of course they too back out of all the deals they themselves made.

  4. How could Rutte even agree to such a deal as he has no authority over Greenland?

That sounds just like his fake trade deals.

I know this isn’t a profound take, and probably a claim based on zero evidence, but Trump just manipulating the market at this point, imo.

The man sets the world on fire for a few weeks and then just does a 180° on a whim.

As another comment mentioned, there really should be accountability for these kinds of actions because they are ripe for corruption and exploitation.

So much brash foot stomping and bluster for a deal which could have been made quietly without any offense. What a baffoon.
