  1. Not sure how you would have free travel besides walking everywhere? You still need to pay for trains, busses, flights, car fuel, etc.

I wouldn’t call the ICE a bullet train either.

Hospital/healthcare isn’t paid from your income tax, you pay extra for health insurance.

The parental leave sounds a bit high compared to what my coworkers have done but no idea.

Never been unemployed so not sure if you make 60% of your old salary.

  2. Doppelkammertoaster on

On paper. What you can do still heavily depends on who your parents are.

  3. no this is wrong at all
you pay health insurance its not free you got one year per child otherwise the Money gets cut from 60% Former Job to 30% for 2 Years or 15% for 3 and so on

  4. Yeah, you also have „unlimited“ sick days unlike the USA for example which has vacation days and so called sick days. But if you are sick for over 6 weeks then you only get 70% of your salary since its not the employer paying you from that point but the health insurance

Also we have atleast 20 vacation days per year by law but having 30 days is very common

  5. Income tax is not 42%, its up to 42%.

    Unemployment is indeed 60%.

Parental leave of up to three years but not on full salary.

    Education is generally free.

Kindergeld is 259 Euros per month but daycare can cost hundreds if available at all.

„Free travel“? The Deutschlandticket costs 63 Euros per month and can be used on regional trains/busses.

Hospital is covered by health insurance but you have to pay 10 Euros per day.

    Highways are safe/

The german high speed trains aren’t bullet trains.

  6. 1. Not the government, the tax payers do via the insurance system.

    2. Yes.

    3. Kinda.

    4. Yes.

    5. Free travel? You mean like you don’t have to pay? LOL no.

    6. You pay with your taxes, so like number 1.

    7. Very safe, especially to the hellish chaos of India.

    8. The ICE is not a bullet train. Bullet trains have separate tracks and often move much faster.

  7. Income Tax isnt this high, it is more like 25% in the Median income. But there is 14% health insurance, 2,6% Unemployment insurance and 18,6% Pension insurance (those 3 are paid halt by the employer, which makes it look less but it needs to be paid anyhow).

So after all, it feels like half is taken from your salary. And there is an always the discussion if the money ist spent efficiently, pension insurance and health are huge topics.

  8. Most of it. However travel is not free. It’s 49,99€ per month and bullet trains (ICE) are not included. Bit it’s very nice to be able to just go to the train station and go wherever you want

  9. this_is_it__ on

-Around 60% of NET for one year
-3 years with maximum 24 months paid (900€/month for 24 months, higher rate if you take less and 900 is the max you can get depending on your income)
-Education is free until High School. Administration fees apply for University (not too high, around 500€/semester)
    -259€/month as off January
    -Free travel is wrong
-Free hospital, yes kinda. We’re still paying health insurance
-Safe highway? Sure it’s not bad at all
-Bullet train, yes. overall clean and modern, always late

Anyone correct me if I’m wrong with anything

Edit: formatting and just realized ICE is a bullet train.

  10. horaison_kik on

Oh don’t tell me how many times these ragebait videos of „free health care“ I have seen. I am like do these people never see their salary slip or what? These people I tell you!

  11. It’s not quite correct. The 42% is kind of an average that is deducted from your salary. And parts of it go into health insurance (that’s free health care), parts go into other social security areas, and you have income tax.

But bottom line, it’s not wrong in terms of the idea. We are having a comparable high tax and insurance burden, but we are getting also a lot from it, everyone.

  12. Noktis_Lucis_Caelum on

    true except for free travel.

unlike america, germany uses taxes to help the people. espacially for health insurance. germanys insurance System is not perfect, but better than americas

  13. Waste_Sound_6601 on

Yes. It is indeed just a list of facts.

    – unemployment benefits is 60% of your last salary. But it is capped at 2640€ up to 3400€ per month (depending on your tax classification) and you must have worked for 12 months in the period of the last 30 months, to actually get it. Otherwise you’ll have to apply for citizens benefit, which is really low and only 563€/month (+they’ll pay for your rent additionally). Getting unemployment benefits is limited to 6 month up to 24 months, depending on your age and for how long you got work prior to this.

    – 3 years maternity/paternity leave is true. But the total time is shared between mom and dad or one of them can take it all. The more years you take, the less money you’ll get to support your living situation. 1 year is 67% of your last salary, but capped at 1800€/month. It drops significantly, if you take 2 or more years. Your job will be protected though – so you will be able to return to your old job by law. For both parents.

    – yes, education is free. But you’ll propably still have to pay for books and learning material, as well as utensils. You can get governmental help, if you are poor. There are private schools, which will not be free. Public transportation (e.g. school bus, or tain etc.) to get pupils to school, is free.

    – yes, 250€/month per child is true. This is governmetal child support money. A littel payment to help support your child and a bit of „motivation“ to make kids in general. You’ll get it when its born all the way up until it’s 18 years old. It can even be extended to 25 years of age, in case the child studies and/or doesn’t have a job yet.

    – free travel is an odd one. Yes, you can travel freely everywhere, if that’s what this is about. Public transportation will cost money though. It is certainly not free in thisregard – you do need to buy tickets. There is a German-wide ticket available, which costs 63€/month, that allows you to travel with any bus, tram, train, subway, etc. all over Germany. But it will not allow you to take the bullet rain or airplanes. Those are more expensive, obviously.

    – free hospital: yes, there is public healthcare paying your bills for sure. You will have to pay 10€ per day for staying in a hospital though. It is limited to 28 days per year – so max 280€ per year. So this one is not entirely true. But it is pretty cheap.

    – highways are safe, yes. Among the safest ones on the planet.

    – yes there are bullet trains. They’re called „ICE trains“ for „InterCityExpress“. Usually Siemens made Velario trains. Germanys equivalent of the French TGV or Japanese Shinkansen.

    If you have a decent job you pay ~1200-1300€ Health insurance. It‘s just insidiously covered up because the employer has to pay 50%;
Hospital is still not conpletely free and you pay usually upgrades for a private room or so

    The 3 years leave on a baby are unpaied, cap for maternity leave is 1800€ per couple (not per person) and for 14 months. and if you have the decent job you have to pay health insurance as well (lower rate);

  15. Green_Routine_7916 on

Bullet train with 40% chance to be late, travel isnt free, 3 years ago i was whitout a job for 1 month, the pay for the month is still beeing processed even after i filled out like 20 documents with questions more personal than prostate examination

  16. GabrielBucannon on

Nothing is free because everyone pays 43 % of income for it. 😉

And people claim 10.000 Euro Child benefits for imaginary kids in foreign countries.

  17. Unemployed for 10 months. Unemployment of $450 for like 6 months or less. Then nada. After 18 years, received 2 weeks severance as long as I didn’t put the company in blast.

  18. inevitablennhilation on

This is exactly how Germany (or pretty much any Western country) gets sold in India and a lot of developing countries. They hype it up like some perfect dream life: amazing jobs everywhere, endless opportunities, super clean systems, zero stress, basically paradise. Reality check: it’s not even close. Every place has its own bullshit to deal with, and a ton of the struggles only hit you once you’re actually living there.

  19. DramaticExcitement64 on

42 % only for every euro you earn above about 60.000 Euros. Everything below slowly progresses towards the 42 %.

If you earn 60.001 Euros, you’ll pay less than 42 % for the 60k and 42 % only on that 1 Euro.

I earn well above 60k per year and pay about 20 % income tax in total.

  20. Free travel might refer to the train system.

There is an old joke by Foil Hog and Arms about that.

Sorry Nate, that one needs a Deutschlandticket for about 65ish euros a month. Still great value, though

  21. NoGravitasForSure on

Nobody has to pay 42% income tax. This is just the top tax rate. The tax rate for normal people is 15% – 25%.
