>An MOD spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there is a live police investigation into a theft which took place at a construction site adjacent to RAF Wyton.
So was it actually on the base or not?
Can you imagine the look on those junkies faces when they realize what they burgled.
£110,000 up to ~£385,000+
The lads will be smoking good tonight I guess
55 tons is actually crazy, as a reference a van can carry around 1 ton of weight. This robbery was definitely planned and probably has links to organised crime.
Raw materials left out in the open at a spy base. A spy base. You honestly couldn’t make this up. This isn’t bad luck or clever thieves, it’s sheer incompetence. We must have absolute muppets running defence, with this level of amateur hour, it’s no wonder they keep getting their asses handed to them.
No surprise.
I was working at Woodford Aerodrome when it was being closed. There were various workmen and people going in and out of site all day long for months.
A group of guys put on High Vis Vests and with a old flatbed Van drove onto site and proceeded to steal £10,000’s of Aircraft Grade Aluminium off-cuts.
Security Guys just waved them onto site, didn’t bother check who they were and what they were doing onsite.
They only discovered that all the off-cuts had been nicked about a week or so after when a worker realised there should have been a lot more.
I was also working at Warton back in 96 when a group of women literally walk onto the site via the south side unopposed, went into the South Hanger with household hammers and proceeded to cause millions of pounds worth of damage to a Hawk.
I know of several other incidents at other sites which never made the news as they were caught before any damage could be caused and it was hushed up because they didn’t people to realise how insanely easy it was to get onto certain sites.
Fact is many sites are quite old and cover a huge areas and we do not have the mindset say like they do in the US which means we don’t have hundreds of cameras, miles of 10ft odd hight barbed wire fencing and armed guards on patrol at every site.
Also for some sites it just simply isn’t possible to make them 100% secure because they were originally built over a hundred years ago and have expanded with the town around them so you would have to knock down houses, move roads and even bridges in a couple of cases.
I can know how you could get into a number of sites with relative ease.
The places your mind go when your standing outside having a ciggy 🙂
I bet this happens all the time with contractors working on bases. It reminds me of the story the physicist Richard Feynman told about when he was working on the Manhattan Project on the base at Los Alamos and he found a gap in the fence that construction workers had made for their convenience.
Feynman would exit the base at the gate, waving to the guards as he left, walk along the road up to the gap in the fence, re-enter the base and go back to the gate and leave again, testing to see how long before the guards noticed he never came in through the gate!
Wyton is hardly top secret. It’s a shell of its former self mind you, but not top secret!
A few years ago I worked for a metal bashing company. We had a huge problem with scrap thefts from our yard. I spoke to the bloke I dealt with at our scrap dealer and asked if he could suggest any way of mitigating the problem . He just laughed and said one of his clients was the MoD and they had the same problem and they couldn’t stop it either.
For sure that was a South African who’s took that copper
