I have the tendency to be dramatic. I’m also young, so I don’t have a long memory. Keep that in mind for the following.

I struggle to think of a reason how this is not a serious contender the most important speech in Canadian history.

It’s bold, and it’s provocative, as others have said, but these kinds of meetings of global powers often have bold and provocative speeches.

This one feels different because of the turning point the world seems to be faced with. The analogy of removing the sign in the window is a great metaphor for Canada’s optimistic pragmatism.

And that’s the thing — it’s not existential or pessimistic. It’s really just an analysis of the current situation, an explanation of how Canada plans to deal with it, and an invitation for anyone else to join us who wish to. And that message is what sets it apart. It paints Canada as a global leader, as a calm and thoughtful observer of the world’s geopolitics, and as a nation that wants to help re-establish order.

I’m just rambling at this point. I want to read this speech like five or six times because I feel like there’s so much to take away from it.

Carney’s speech was brilliant. He spoke intelligently and so highly of our entire country. Made me feel proud of our country and his response to the times.

That speech was part diplomacy, part callout for bad behavior to the US, and part sales pitch to the rest of the world.

I’m still not entirely swayed by the Liberal party but I’ll be damned if I wasn’t proud to have an intelligent, well-spoke leader on that stage today.

It’s nice to not feel ashamed by who represents us.
